Dealers charge a diagnosis fee. At my dealer its $130 but it varies by dealership.
If they find that your tranny is bad and that they wil cover it, then you don't have to pay for the diagnosis fee.

I will call out a stock 3G TL, I haven't run into many 6speeds, autos are easy pickings. I have driven an auto and 6speed 3G TL 05, 06, and an auto 07, and I know on a regular basis I can beat an auto and depending how good the driver is I can take a 6speed, I would love to run an AUTO 07 TL-S, notice I said auto, I know better than to mess with a 6speed, I bet it would be closer than people think, then again it could be worse, but thats the fun of it!

You may have had a TL-S but was it modded? Don't knock what you don't know...
frew bolt on's would get none type s to a type s horspower easy... if you goto comptech website you can see on dyno sheets that with header and just muflers you get 19.7 hp to the ground you do intake thats another 3-4 hp change the cam and you looking at good 30-35 hp after tune...

I wasnt thinking you had a 4 speed

By all means
Have your local guy rebuild it and have his own warranty

I would not expect the dealer to know the exact nature of changes and dates of changes to the transmissions.

All Others: The dealer is required by law to have you sign a work authorization for your car to be in the shop. That is why they write a normal repair order with a 1.5 hour diagnosis fee. That gives them the right to look at your car. Without a work order- they are car thieves stripping your car for parts!
Once they determine it is a warranty issue- a new warranty repair order is written and attached, you pay nothing for the diagnosis as it is included with the warranty

May you transmission live long !!
