6mt rebuild progress

i wanted to share some of my experiences with the cls 6mt tranny rebuild i was doing. all in all, the tranny itself wasnt all that bad to rebuild. used a couple of common household tools and they work just fine. i will post pics tomorrow once i finish downloading them. mechanic guru's please chim in,

With the Rest:

Buy a 4-Stroke Cross Bike (250cc) and Have sum FUN!!

don't buy AV6 tranny, get 03 CL or 04-08 TL trans. AV6 has no LSD.

and there's quite a few more expensive things besides the transmission.

TL AUTO Trannys have LSDs????
Since you dont mention get a Manual Tranny just ""get 03 CL or 04-08 TL trans"" I can be Confusing your Comment "Assclown"..

If I recall No Auto tranny have LSD only the Manual Trannys have it, This is becouse of Room the Autos didnt come with LSDs. The Type-S comes with VSA but thats not an LSD just a Traction Control to limit Slip on both wheels.

Ohh I wasnt talking about Manuals tough, I was saying AV6 AUTO... For me Manual is 100% CL-S or 3G TL Type-S.

Inside of a auto tranny, they use drum like devices instead of syncros. Its very unique. Ive seen them apart and its mad crazy. The manuals on the other hand arent that bad. Very easy to install. Thanks to Teo, jcharged, steven, and everyone here for making it possible. I wish they had more bad trannys out there. Would b a hell of a deal

The countershaft rebuilt. New gears and sync's. Just a 2jar pulley and a mallet. Mark the gears b4 separation and your days will b nice. I also had the helms manual for reference.

So how hard was rebuild?

i have done a lot mechanic work on cars but never done tranny rebuild. Do you just have to buy just tranny rebuild kit an put back what you take out?

There is no rebuild kit. If your gonna buy gears make sure u buy the set. If u got some mechanic experience u will okay.,take alot of pics, I did, I marked everything and I also numbered my gears. Work the shaft separately. Dont mix the parts, shaft and the gears. U will b confuse. All n all. Not bad.

Rebuilding trans is actually fairly easy and straight forward...Autos are not too bad eitehr, just a ton of small parts and rings

It was coming along really good. But I notice a crack in my dam clutch housing. I quit. This ish is crazy. Im gonna killed this rebuild thread and.bb just buy a tranny. It will cost more money for another clutch housing. I dont know how it crack. I put the top and was lightly, I say lightly tap with a mallet and when I noticed oil coming out on the bottom side. I pissed.

can it b welded. its the plate where the bearing sits. the countershaft as well.

A machine shop could weld it. Its just aluminum. Also depending on what part of the trans it is you can buy the housings. Cant tell but is that the left side cover? if it is you can buy that for about 160 bucks. (too bad i turned all my old ones in for scrap, i had 3 of them laying around at one point)

are you positive that it is a crack? looks just like a casting mark to me. every honda block and trans i have taken apart has had at least some of those.

yea it is the that plate that the countershafts sits in. i didnt spread the snap ring out enough when the top half was going on and it cause that plate to crack. i ended up buying a new housing and it cracked aloso, cuz i had a weld shop try to fix my old one, and the welder complain about the casing giving off deadly toxic fumes and every time he welded it, it crack. but i have the procedure for fixing it. thanks for all you guys input and the encouragement to keep moving.

Okay so my progress has slowed down a lil. Been busy and trying to save some money for the one or two pieces left. I will buy another clutch housing and redo the install. Hopefully I still can make my goal.

Any updates?

While you were doing the rebuild, did you replace the differential bearings?

If so, did you use the special tool 07HAA-SF10100 with a beam torque wrench to check/adjust the carrier bearings preload?

If you did not use the special tool, how did you improvise to perform this important task?

did not replace those bearing

i had to purchase a new housing. bought it today, shipping is like a week and half. once done, tranny wil bolted up and then tested.

FYI, if you have the Helms for the CLS, look on page 13-72, M/T Differential.
It states:

Carrier Bearing Preload Adjustment

'If any of the items listed below were replaced, the carrier bearing preload must be adjusted.
-Transmission housing
-Clutch housing
-Differential carrier
-Spacer
-Carrier bearing and outer race'

You may have already seen this.

Anyway, here is a 'Tip' quote from NVA-AV6 (Paul) to phee when he was rebuilding his manual tranny back in the day. This came from the 'Turbo Kit' thread over on the 3G TL side, page 69.

Hey thanks man. Actually I gave it up. I didnt have the time and patience, so my man Paul Nva6 has the tranny. I had to buy the other half becuz I didn't spread that spacer far out enough. Sucks that was a brand new case too. I really appreciated the inputs.
