6000K HIDs for Fogs
6000K HIDs for Fogs
How many of you guys have turned your fogs lights into HIDs? ....6000K or whatever K.... It seems like only a hand full of people.
Well anyway, a month ago I installed mine and I hooked it up to the battery instead of being inline because I didn't want it to mess up the OEM harness or wiring. I know there are a few of you that said that you have not experienced any problems. I just did it for my own peace of mind.
Supposedly the ballasts draw 3x the current at startup and when they are running they draw about 47Watts of power instead of the 35Watts that you think they are drawing because it is labeled as 35Watts. So at 3x the current at startup that is like 150Watts for a few seconds.
A friend has had this HIDs for about a 2 years and recently they haven't been working right. The flicker when starting up, or sometimes one of them does not startup. We troubleshot everything and the ballasts and bulbs are both ok. Swapped driver side and passenger side, ballast and bulb one at a time to eliminate everything. Also it worked fine in another car for weeks.
Last measure taken was to hook it up to the battery directly. Only other problem that I could think of was his stock wiring (which works ALL the time with regular halogen bulbs) so I eliminated that variable. Now they work great, startsup faster, no flickering and has been working with no problems for a few days now.
Just an FYI.
Oh btw, this was an Nissian Altima.... I am sure that others have had similar problems.

Yup, I read in another forum too, that at initial power up that the HID Ballast needs 3 times current draw, so that would be about 150Watts which is dfenitely something that the stock wiring can't handle. Im going to do this myself very soon w/ Bxscig.
