Question 4-spd / 5-spd comparison

I havent test-drove a 99 yet, only the 00. Debating between the two. I have read that the 99s seem to have less tranny issues ? Also, how is the O/D on the 4-spds ? Is there a noticeable difference as far as engine stress at highway speeds ?

Can anyone give an example of RPMs at say 85 mph between the two ?

the 5 spd is doing great on hwy...talking about OD...

at 85mph (140km) is just a little bit under 2500rpm

at 60mph (100km0 is just 1750rpm

at 110mph (180km) is just 3000rpm!!!

Naaiicce....that's what I was hoping to hear.

Hopefully someone will be able to post the RPM at this speed in the 99.....

I'm not absolutely certain, but I thought I heard somewhere that the top gears (99: 4th, 2K+: 5th) are of the same ratio. Therefore the engine speed at highway cruising speeds should be the same.
I'd be glad to take some readings from my car after work tonight and post the results, if you don't mind the wait.

That would be great if you could help me out like that....

I just need to narrow down my option to buy 99 or 00. I would love to get a low-mileage 99 for a lot cheaper than a 00, but I dont know if I'll regret getting the 4-spd over the 5-spd. Assuming that the gearing ratios are the same, you may have made my mind up for me.....

Here are the gear ratios of the 99 & 2000 TL
1999 3.2TL with 4speed
1st 2.534
2nd 1.502
3rd 0.947
4th 0.608
Reverse 1.846
Final Drive 4.200

2000 3.2TL with 5speed
1st 2.563
2nd 1.552
3rd 1.021
4th 0.653
5th 0.470
Reverse 1.846
Final Drive 4.428

The 2000 benefits from a redesign intake manifold not on the 1999. This intake manifold which optimizes the intake charge being fed to the combustion chambers -futher boosting performance, efficiency & around-town performance.

Now ask me if I know about what I just typed the answer would be NO but this is fact. They are the gear ratios of the 1999 & 2000 models.
Also remember that the 2000 models when in the Sport -Shift mode will change from 1st gear to 2nd byitself the 1999 does not do it. This is something that alot of people don't like about the 2000+ models. I think most of the people were the ones that had the 1999 model. So since there are more TL/CL cars that do this you have not had this complaint since the 2000+ models all do this & the 99 did not.

I agree with you on that point!
... however there are points you may want to consider, other than engine speeds in top gear.
And... FTM-1 has already answered your original question and said some of the things that I will now delete from my message (I hate you, FTM!!!! ) while I was typing this reply, so...

I know someone who test drove a 99 and a 2K model on one visit to the dealer and he really liked the 2000 model better, because he felt it was much smoother under acceleration.

So, I guess after all that, my point is that you should drive both models, if at all possible, before you make your final decision.
Later,
KH.

It's been ~15 years since I took typing as well.
I didn't do too badly at it, but...
It's just that I had written 3 chapters to explain the differences.

I have a 99TL which I love, one of my friends has an 02 TLS, which I've driven several times. The 02 tranny is smoother on the upshifts, I've always noticed that my 99 is a little rougher than I would like. At "normal" highway speeds (65-90) I tend to run about 700rpm higher than the 02. Of course, this puts me that much closer to the VTEC power-band, so I won't argue
There are ranges between 60 and 110 where a 99 TL-P will outperform an 00 or later TL-P. It also helps that the car weights less since it has fewer airbags, but some insurance companies will charge you a lower rate for having those, so...

I've also heard far fewer complaints against the 99 tranny, but some of them have been put in the 'dead' pile according to a survey run a while back on this board, so you can't say that it's exempt.

If you do get a 99, the very first thing you will want to do is swap out the cupholder. It's the best $20 you'll ever spend on your car.

"payyourtoll" i hope ur not getting rid of that Lude to get a 99TL. ur prelude is off the hook!!! i love preludes... every weekend i go to the races in the BX, and there is always this prelude there with a plate "Illuded" hehe. totally debaged including the "H" with 6000ks, and a sick kit. it is the cleanest looking car ive seen. and fast as hell too! but the luxury features of the Lude to the TL isnt comparable... i think once u sit in the Tl, ull fall in love with it.

Yes, that sounds about right. 110mph at 3k rpms when in 5th gear and torque converter is locked. 5th gear is a very very tall gear. This really begs the question of what our car's top speed would be given a free and clear stretch of road and no speed governer.

Yes, the 5 speed tranny TL's are faster than the 4 speed tranny TL's in 0-60 times. Just look at the gear ratios. the 5 speed allows a more close spacing of gear ratios. You can see that in the 5 sp, 3rd gear is a very nice gear indeed.

4th gear is another story.

At 3000 rpm's my 99 does 90 mph. It was less, maybe 85, before I got my intake, I can't remember exactly though.

another great thing ab the 99 is that it doesnt have a cover on the engine, so u cud see all of the cylinders and winding metal tubes on the top of the engine (dont really know how to explain) if uve ever seen an accord V6 engine, ull know wut im talkin ab.... oooo, and to paint around the open valves, that wud look sweeeeeet. for 00+ Tls, u cant remove that cover on the engine, can u? that rectanlguar metal plate?

We do have a cover on the 99's those metal tube thingys that you are talkin' about are really part of the cover unlike the 98 Accord V6s.

inspire, go and try if u r not sure..i did it last friday...

yup i love the 3rd gear most
it gives me gd mid-range power from 35ph to 60mph..need the punch on hwy ramp...
compare to other 4 gears, 3rd is the most important one for accleration...
