25mpg...

In mixed highway (75-80mph)/city (much stop and go) driving, AC at full and complete blast in 110+ degree Arizona heat, with a semi-lead foot...engine and tranny seem to be running just fine. All services were performed prior to me purchasing the car (5 days ago), according to the records provided.

In your more experienced opinions, is this decent mileage for these conditions? I really can't complain, as it's about the same I was getting with my D15B2 powered '89 LX, but I drove THAT car with a super-lead foot. :P

I'd say that's pretty good considering the conditions. I only get about 18-19 myself but I have a lead foot. I'm experimenting right now by going only 70 on the freeway and keeping the RPMs under 2500. We'll see how much of a difference it makes.

My 1999 TL pretty consistently gets 25-26 MPG with a mix of about 75% highway and 25% city driving.

If I mix in more city driving the MPG drops significantly.

For 100% highway driving on long trips I've seen about 33 MPG. And that's at about 78 MPH with the A/C on. Other have reported similar results with all highway driving.

:yeah but I can't imagine myself going 60 on the freeway. I don't have that kind of patience. I can barely stand going 70.

the first few tanks go fast as you play with VTEC (that kick at 4700rpm to redline) and feel out the car. For the conditions- thats doing very well. Check the paperwork and see whats really been done for service, Beyond oil changes its first big service is 105k miles
If you have over 60,000 miles:
It may need new spark plugs and a fuel system cleaning-Seafoam!!!
Whats the current mileage and what year TL???

Welcome to the forum!!

Have a read of the main thread titles- can be broken down by areas for tires- performance or problems. That will get you started - and try the search feature before starting a new thread on a subject thats probably covered several hundred times~ what brakes tires oil...........
Its a great place- and ziners hold meets- drives- help each other with installs!!!

There's not a chance you can go 35 mpg. A 3.2 liter will always use more gas than a 2.4 liter. A TSX can do 35 but only if you drive slow and I doubt it's practical.

28.8 for my last fill up. 74% agressive highway and 25% moderate city with SOME A/C usage in my TL-S.. Seafoam really made a difference because usually I'd see low 20's with this kind of driving. If I did 100% highway at 65mph I would think I can hit 33mpg easily with this car. It's running MINT right now.

I am the proud owner of an '02 TL-P, 132k miles. As far as the records go, the first owner racked up the miles (125k in 4 years) but pampered the car, all services done at an Acura dealership (Peoria Acura) in a timely fashion. The records include the "recall" letter for the tranny issue but no actual paperwork for work being performed, so I have no idea of whether or not this is the original tranny. So far is has not exhibited any of the symptoms laid out in the tranny issue thread, so I guess I'm OK for now...

The second owner apparently was involved in a fender bender, again, all repairs occuring at an Acura dealership and other than one headlight being new and the other being the foggy original there is no evidence of the accident remaining. Car tracks straight and runs well. I just wasn't sure what type of mileage to expect from the 3.2l, I was pleased with the 25mpg I saw from the first tank but since my other Hondas all returned worse than average mileage, I didn't know what was normal for the TL.

I've only hit VTEC once in town and maybe twice on the freeway. I don't wring it out that much...yet. The squat at full throttle in first and second is terrible (at least compared to my stiffly suspended past cars). I wanted to leave the suspension on this one stock but I guess I'm going to have to Pro-Kit this bad boy at the very least.

Thanks for the info and the warm welcome. I love it here already.

I would have agreed that 35 MPG was not possible with the TL except for the fact that I was able to hit 33 MPG on a couple of long highway trips at 78 MPH with the A/C running. If you backed off to 65 MPH or less you might very well crack the 35 MPG mark.

Question

Okay, well I get somewhere in the mid 20's unless I'm feeling good that day. Then, I get somewhere around 14 or 15. What's up with that?

25mpg mixed is good.

You can get 30+ mpg all highway, I've maxed out at 38mpg pure freeway all cruise with A/C. You can dig up my other threads to see it.

I hope you enjoy your car, it's a great buy.

Just filled up again, 19.90mpg on this tank. I have been romping on it more, I had to smack down a 80's-era 5.0 Stang and a fresh off the lot V6 Fusion that thought they were good. Not good enough, I'm afraid.

(PS In no way, shape, or form do I advocate street racing of any type.)

One thing I have noticed about this car is it is incredibly hard to fill the tank up.
It always seems to stop somewhere between 1 - 2 gallons short of really being filled.
That can affect gas mileage computations on a single tank drastically in both directions.

Over several tanks with careful refills I seem to get 28 - 30 MPG over rolling terrain.
It probably could go a bit higher but I am running plus zero sized tires that are a
bit fatter than OEM.

This drivetrain does extremely well at constant highway speeds because of 5th gears
final ratio (2k RPM at 70 MPG) but city driving is very very low. Kicking in the VTEC
also hits the mileage as well.

I notice a drastic difference in MPG between two drivers. The Wife Unit gets severely
less MPG than I do. She has a heavy foot when starting off. Couple that with a 4 mile
commute and the MPG drops to near 20.

How do you know that you're not completely filling the tank? Are you adding additional fuel after the pump's auto shut off? I used to do that all of the time but I read that you can saturate the charcoal canister with fuel. So I just fill to the first click now.

Also, I've hit 33 MPG in my 1999 TL and it doesn't even have a 5th gear.

You can get better then 35mpg on the TSX. It's all in how you drive. We owned one for a few years and it was alot better on gas then I was expecting.

FYI - displacement and # of cylinders is not the only factor in mpg.

99 TL-P and I get 26.3 on average with 80% Highway and 20% city. On 100% I get 28mpg before seafoam treatment. I plan on doing a proper seafoam treatment again soon.

I do run a K&N drop-in filter and just put new plugs in.
