2004 Tl
I heard from American Honda in Troy Ohio on Monday (1/20/03) that the 2004 TL will be 3.4 liter and have over 280 HP. In fact the word is that the engine produced " well over 300 HP" and had to be "detuned" to 280 to prevent it from having more power than the NXS.

Quite a few car companies have done this. A few years ago when GM put the new-at-the-time LS6 motor in the Camaro, it came dangerously close to surpassing the Corvette in HP. So they "detuned" it in order to avoid ruining sales of the Vette (and pissing off current Vette owners).

Sorry i thought that they were gonna leave the 2004 TL 300 HP but Advertise it 280 HP.. Basically just advertising wrong HP..

I think detuning is a reasonable thing todo, if in fact the new 3.4 can dish out 300+. Although the TL and NSX are totally two different cars, how would you feel if a $85K sport car has less power than a $32K sport sedan? Acura TL/CL-S owners are complaning about the 03 Honda with there 240 HP already. I'm pretty confident that minor tunning up the 03 Accord will give you 260+
They could keep it at 300 and advertise 280...but it will only be time before consumers found out and label Acura of lying or even false adverstising.

I assume that in a few years when the redo the NSX it will have well over 300hp. I thought that the new TL-P will have something like the same numbers as the current TL-S and the new TL-S would have around 280hp.
I'm dissatisfied that they are keeping the RL with a V6 and FWD. I could see the V6 if they improve hp above or really near 300 but FWD in a flagship sedan? Do they want to compete?

I Never got how a RL which is more luxurious and mroe expensive with a bigger engine is slower than the TL!?? I mean the engine is bigger so dont u think it would be well over 260 but ITS LIKE SLOW AS HELL!?? I dont get what they did.. I mean they detuned the engine on purpose!?
Anyways I think that if infact the TL is Detuned that People into Modding will soon figure out ways to TUNE IT UP faster than NSX and soon FAST! Like i know one of the Audis that if u chip it that it gives u like 10-20 hp.. So its all possible..
It wouldn't be that big of a deal if they underrated the TL's new engine, Ford has done it with the new 03 Cobra saying that it has 390 at the crank, and I hear that people have dynoed it and it puts about 370-380 on the ground, which is more than 390 at the crank...that car is doing 400, of course they did this to aviod that fiasco with the '99 320hp Cobras.

Personally I'm hoping they go hybrid crazy.... If they don't I won't be buying a new TL at the end of my lease. I've got a really nasty feeling that gasoline will double over the next 3 years. I was amazed at what was unveiled at the Detroit auto show this month, I think that the car makers have decided to say "the heck with fuel economy". Hopefully Honda will retain their current philosophy.
