One question.. do we need to shift according to the speeds listed in the manual??

I have this habit of staying in 4th gear in SS mode while cruising at 60 in city.. is that okay?

I drove around in D4/D5 for a while to get a feel for the shift points when I first got the car. I use SS a lot now and stay around the speeds indicated in the manual. If you're going too slow, the SS will automatically kick down. 60 is fine for 4th. I'm usually in 4 or 5 on if I'm doing 60 on the hwy.
If you're in motion, try avoid throwing it into SS while it's shifting. Takes a little getting use to at first. I have a lot of fun with 3rd and 4000+. Once you get a feel for the powerband, it gives you a little more control.

As long as your rpm's are in a reasonable range, you can use whatever gear you want. Just know that if they get too low you can stall the car (ie. below 1200 or so).

Experiment with it and try to learn what the auto tranny does by switching to SS while driving and then seeing what gear it has selected. Try and guess, get a feel for your car.

So much driving to do, so few roads :-)

I've never stalled the car before... I've purposely stayed in 5th gear and slowly reduce speed, but of course, the car downshifted...

If you're not racing, any gear would be fine as long as it's in the RPM range, but if you're racing, here's what i recommend... shift to 3rd gear, about 68... shift to 4th (doubt you need it but...), 108...

You cannot stall, at least your not suppose to...its an auto tranny and SS mode IS NOT real stick shift!!

I have heard that using the SS maode can cause some of these Tranny problems we ahve all heard about. I have not searched, but I would be willing to guess that those going through trannies like under wear are using SS alot.

Thats not true at all. In fact on a poll on Acura-cl.com they found that people using gate shift or Sport Shift were less likely to have the tranny problem. The reason is that the tranny problem stems from constant shifts from 2->3 and 3->2 ... when you're stuck in traffic and you leave the tranny to shift on its own, it constantly is shifting like that to save gas. People who do it themselves are less likely to shift as often. Those constant 2->3 and 3->2 shifts cause the 3rd gear clutch pack to heat up like crazy and slowly disintegrate.

If you dont believe me, read EricL's thread about Acura's findings on the tranny problem on acura-cl.com in the transmission forum.

that's pretty interesting but defective products will always fail...babying them will only delay the failure

Don't forget the lack of transmission fluid being supplied to 3rd gear's clutch patch to cool it.

If you want a new tranny right away, just spray some NAWZZzz.

SS is idiot proof fellas... and there are plenty of idiots out there w/ the SS option on their auto trannies..

I've hovered at 6000rpms in 2nd gear going about 60-ish w/ SS .. it's all good...

you can downshift into 2nd when you didn't think it was possible.. it's pretty scary how much power you have up in the band for an autotragic.. er .. i mean automatic tranny.

the guy who said you could stall the TL-S cracks me up!!! so after you stall it, how do you dump the "magical" clutch and restart the engine? (j/k)
