2003 Acura 3.2TL Type S as a first car (22 y/o)?

What do you think?

I'm also open to opinions.

I'm 22 years old, male, and I've never bothered to get my license or a car, because I haven't needed either, but it looks like for 2009 that will change. As such, I'm looking for my first car.

I wanted a Honda Accord, but then I saw that the Acura is basically the "luxury" version of the Honda, so I decided to go with that. I chose this car purely because it looked nice. I don't know a thing about cars, hence the reason I'm asking for help.

I hope to not be the ignorant one for very much longer.

Thanks.

Its a great car, watch out for the tranny issue. Ensure it's been replaced. The Accord is a great car as well.

I'm sure we all love our TL's I love mine at least.

It sure beats having just a Honda Accord!

In short, the TL-S has adequate power, decent fuel efficiency, reliable (except for the tranny), looks pretty classy to me, practical (large cabin, 4 doors, lots of trunk space).

Yes lovely car! I like it alot im just tripping about my tranny issue. The dealer told me not to mod my car or it voids my warranty. So that is why i am so skeptical about putting my springs on. But get the TL i had an accord a 01 almost the same as the TL but my opinion TL is WAYYYYYY better

to everything iforyou said.. even knowing the tranny issue i still bought it and everything is running perfect..
before i bought the tl.. i was thinkin of a 98-02 accord too but my friend found a nice tl for me, best decision i made in my life.. words can't explain..
no matter what you do to an accord, you will never be more satisfied than having a tl.. i hope this helps you make your decision

Like everyone one else said, the transmission is shitty on these cars, i hear it's a problem on the rsx's as well, so... get this and worry when your tranny shits out on you and you should order some ATLP Exhausts

Yea they lied to you. No mod can void the warranty unless they can prove that the mod causes whatever to fail. There have been people who had their tranny's replaced with superchargers still on there. Ive had two trannys replaced with intake, headers, exhaust and pullies.

Hold up, did you buy from an Acura dealership?

No i bought it from Honda but i bought the extended warranty through another place. Well for example if my shocks blew and i had springs on then that would void it huh?

Do you happen to work for Acura?

That response sounded like it came right out of a car salesmans book. LOL.

TL is nice and roomy for what you get. Love the heat sets and the fact that it has a sunroof.

There is nothing wrong with the accord either. IMO I love the nsx style taillights on the coupe. One of my favorite body style from Honda.

it's a great buy. i got mine when i was 19 and i felt like a king. all the other teenagers were rolling in their chopped spring civic and i got leather seats a comfortable ride, decent sound systems, on and on.

with the 4th gen out, the 2nd gen should be droppin in price, grab one and you'll be glad you did. it's sexy if you decide to mod it. it's comfortable and practical if you decide not to. cant really go wrong

If you have aftermarket springs and the OEM shocks crapped out, not even factory Honda will honor the factory warranty on the broken shocks, unless the service guy is willing to pull some strings for you.

The OEM shocks are designed with the OEM springs as an balanced unit. Aftermarket springs have a different height and stiffer spring rates than the OEM springs, and will put lots of stress onto the OEM shocks, causing the shocks to blow out much sooner.

As mentioned above, these are great cars with the exception of the transmission.

Be aware that Acura offered an 7 year 9 month/109,000 mile extended warranty on the transmission for every 1999-2002 TL 2003 TL and only some of the 2003 TLs. Whether or not a particular 2003 TL is covered depends on the car's VIN number.

Also note that any TL with a salvage title is not covered by the warranty.

A replacement transmission can run $3,000 or more so you might want to try to find a car with a warranty.

Spend some time reading the Tranny Failure Thread for additional information:

A $3K per transmission job is rather hefty compared to the second-hand 2G TL price. Make sure to buy as long a warranty on the tranny as possible.

If I had known about the tranny issue before I bought this car I wouldn't have. I'd have got an Accord V6 or a Nissan Maxima. That said I still love my TL and it hasn't left me stranded once.
