2003 1.8t, i laugh

So my boy just got a new a4 1.8t w/quattro. And I'm telling him he has NOOO chance and recultantly he agreed in a straight line. I told him the typeS would dogg him in the corners. Then he suggested we race on ice, snow, rain and SAND!?! Just to take advantage of his AWD. I hope we do race when it's raining and I just happen to get a good enough start to reel in 260hp and 232lbft against 170-4turboed hp....

Anyone here love the canyon roads when no one's on them? Beverly Glenn is sooooooooooooooooooo MUCH fun!!!

Sorry to say it but he will smoke you in the corners and in unfair weather conditions. In a striaght line yes you will kill him no questions asked, but a good driver in an A4 Quattro will kill us in the snakes... 1.8T or 3.0, doesn't matter.. Our TL is moderately fast and handles moderately well... thats its.. it's no super sedan or anything....

Do not be so sure. Take note that the M3 increased its advantage on wet. Those Audi are just too porky.

But those S4 is so heavy at the front..coz they have a V8 in it..

but this is again the M3..also our TL/TL-s is 61/39..so it is not that

much diffence to a V8 S4.

If the M3 is faster then the Audi, how come the BMW is behind the Audi in the pictures??
The TLS kick ass but on bad weather conditions I take it easy. Good luck, don't kill yourself!

I certainly don't think you believe that they wrote a whole article that is now false because their cover picture shows the M3 behind the S4??

The S4 will rule an M3 in the curves, even when wet. It may be a couple fractions of a second slower to 60 but they have the quarter mile according to car and driver. I would choose the S4 over any car any day.

I wouldn't say the S4 rules the M3 on the curves and I'm not saying that is an inferior car but give it some credit where it is due...the S4 is a great car in it's own right, but built for a different crowd...(I still love the B5s more), maybe when the RS4 comes around things will change...

To sum it up, the V8 in the new S4 has completely ruined the handling dynamics of the car, making it very front heavy. The old S4 with the turbo 2.7V6 is a more neutral handling car.

that article compares the M3, a race-bred sports car to an audi. we're comparing the audi to a TL-S. irrelevant information. good try though.

'zactly!

phatratpak: I hope you aren't racing for a pink slip or something. A TL-S is no M3. That Audi will absolutely destroy you in the corners in good or bad weather. When I say destroy, I mean a$$rape, "smoke", whatever the h=ll you want to call it. If you don't believe me, go test-drive one. H=ll, go test-drive a non-quattro which will do the same, but not as badly. Seriously.

I wanted an Audi, but it was just too slow for me and to strong on the price for the options I wanted. Service was iffy here as well. However, driving it in some twisties by the dealer--near where I live and drive my modded TL-S, that car would trounce me in them and on an on-ramp or clover-leaf. No contest at all. Your only hope is for some seriously long straights and not a lot of curves. Don't forget the brake fade on our beloved TL-S sucks as well and the corners will fu(k you over there as well...

In the past I have owned both a BMW and an Audi with quattro, both with five speed manual. In even light rain, God forbid snow, the BMW was best left safely at home in the garage. In the Audi one didn't even notice bad weather.

I think that you qualify for best urban legends writer! I owned an Audi 5000CD Quattro and I can tell you that my Accord '96 felt more controllable on wet. The ONLY benefit of AWD is to get you out of turns quicker and better acceleration on wet. Like Car&Driver wrote at many occasions about AWD; "Additional mass is more of a detriment."

1) I was suggesting that beating my friend in the rain would add salt to the wound, I'm not a dumbass, stop light racing is something I don't do very mcuh...

2) anyone have skidpad or slalom numbers for a4 1.8quattro and tl-S? that would be what i'm looking for here....

Thats your problem. Try driving the latest generation 8E A4's and then get back to us. Those cars handle like they are on rails with nothing more than the optional sport suspension and wheels.

You cannot compare a 5000 quattro to the new B6, they are LEAGUES ahead of your old car in EVERY aspect.

BTW, I respect the S4, but I'll take the M3, thanks

Skidpad numbers?
LOL...You are killing me. Go DRIVE one. I think a Ford Focus has a better skidpad number than a TL-S. Think it will win?

And you are right: '96 5000 isn't even going to keep up with the TL-S (nor will that '98 Accord)...

Not really. They are way too heavy to be handlers. Look at the auto press (American and European) and a general trend is that Audi has gone soft lately. Soft enough to be noticed and it is not rare in Euro mags to see "Too soft" among their minuses.

thank you, I've read tons of articles on the a4 being a pig in the curves and generally less of a driver's car and more of a boulevard cruiser... the old a4 was all about the driving...

Gentlemen, relax, yes if we talk stock, an Audi AWD will be faster and more secure than a TL-S but if you modified the suspension of the TL-S and you take the time to get some training in driving you will smoke check that Audi on the slalom, the car helps but if the driver is better you can say good by to that Audi, I don't think I will risk my car on ice or rain like that but good luck and be safe out there.

all the tl needs is a better set of tires. the car does handle fairly well with the stock tires! they are designed to be predictable and they are! a better set of tires and the car can really handle great. i race mine on road courses and it will hold its own against alot of sports cars. the real key is knowing how to drive!

maxx96: If you are from Jax, then you know where the Audi dealer is. I have a modified TL-S with 18's, better tires and suspension...I can attest that I've driven a 1.8t Audi in quattro and non-quattro as well as the S4...I've driven my friend's '00 A4 which has a chip and some minor engine mods--no suspension mods. I will tell you that the Audi's in any of those forms will absolutely a$$rape my TL-S on the JTB clover-leafs, all the twisties around Gate Parkway, Touchton, Deerwood Park and further down Southside at I-95...My TL-S may be grossly faster, but if I entered into those turns behind an Audi, I'd get left in a hurry only hoping for a straight-away to catch up. Rain or shine, it wouldn't matter...

While you guys talked about aftermarket suspension upgrades for the TL-S, there's also a factory sport suspension option for the A4. An A4 quattro, when equipped with the sport suspension, makes the ride very rough, but also makes the handling even more formidable.

A 1.8T B6 A4 wieghs less than the TLS. I guess that means that the TLS can never handle well regardless of wheels/tires/suspension???

It's our resident Audi expert, A418t81!

Of all people, you know that I'd rather have my TL-S than your slow krautmobile. But I just can't seem to get my point across that you'd blow me away in someplace like Dahlonega (sp)...Between the fwd, suspension and brake issues, you'd kill me...

But I'd take you on 400 on the way up from Cumming...

maybe when I had the stock turbo....

But for real, I like both of the cars. The TLS is alot of fun to drive, gets KILLER mileage, and has been absolutely flawless so far. My generation A4 handles fairly well, but even though the new B6's weigh a bit more, the chassis dynamics and suspension setup is much more advanced. I have bilsteins and H/R's on my car and I'd have to say that the stock sport 1.8T's handle at least as well based on my own experience. That's hard for me to admit b/c I'm not a huge fan of the B6's

I've heard that the new chassis for the A4/S4 has better handling characteristics than the previous gen. I love the new S4 and there is actually a comparo somewhere (video I mean) where they tested both the current M3 and the new S4. Straight line the M3 was a tad quicker in the 1/4 but around a track the S4 bested the M3's time by about a second. I'll try and find the link...read about it in A-CL.

And r10apple, I think A418t81 will a$$rape you on both the straights and curves! After he's done he might give you the dirty sanchez for good measure! No offense its just I'd read his car is that fast. A4, was it a 13.2 I read at some point?

I can't fu(k with a non-stock turbo and other goodies...With an intake/exhaust/chip combo, I'm confident in my TL-S (my friend has a '00 with this and I have the nod going skrake). But with a turbo upgrade lurking, oh well...Whaddya say other than "whooooooosh there went A418t81"!

What part of Atlanta do you hail from and what all have you done to your A4??

An employee of mine has been toying with the idea of working his new A4 1.8t which I am all for and am trying to encourage (maybe I should pay him more then ). At this point he doesn't stand a chance against me nor did an A4 2.8 while heading into the office the other day. But it would be interesting to run against a highly modded A4 1.8t in my CL-S6SC.

this might be a little late but i just wanted to say something, when your comparing cars and there both stock. You cant mod the weaker car to keep up with the better car, that leaves you with 1 modded car and 1 stock car. that wouldnt look to good in comparison.

"sure that TLS out cornered the audi, but it also has major suspension upgrades just to keep up, had the audi had the same upgrades, we'd be in the same postiton we are now, the audi would still out perform"

just my .02

Well, yes and no.

I agree but with a suspension there is sort of a grey area. What if one car is shod with summer only tires from the factory and the other with all season. Is changing the tires actually modifying the car?

Some manufacturers offer a sport suspension from the factory, others unfortunately do not. By adding slightly stiffer springs and sway bars may be modding but it could have certainly been offered that way from the factory. This is just to get the stiffness comparable. After that point it is all open.
