Which car am I leaning towards right now? Well, living in the Northeast, the winter weather makes me really WANT the 4Motion, but my frequent trips within the Tri-State area are screaming "get the nav". I currently drive an American car, so either one would be a step up. If I had the money, I'd get one for me, the other for the wife, and would drive them both all the time. But, if I had to buy ONE car today, I'd get the TL-S. I think the interior luxury is more my ticket. Screw the snow! Drive the wife's SUV when it snows...

R,
I've never really drive Volkswagons, but I know they adopt their AWD package from their sister company, AUDI, which I've always thought to be state-of-the-art german autos. Hell, the CVT tranny in the new 3.0 Audi A4 on of the first of its kind! I think the 4-wheel drive is very reassuring in winter weather -- and even in rainy weather -- and it led me to purchase an AWD model myself. It's really a toss-up between the two cars -- I don't know for sure if the 4motion is designed to be a SPORT sedan, is it?
I like the Volkswagon look, but I've also heard numerous times that they don't hold up as well as Japanese autos -- don't know how credible this is since I've never owned one. You can never really go wrong w/ front-wheel drive in "regular" highway/city application. You can rant and rave about how the front-wheel drive doesn't compare to RWD, but after owning a RWD car in '96, I'll NEVER BUY another RWD again -- don't care WHAT saftey technology is integrated into the RWD system.. front or AWD for me all the way.
I like your choices, get what meets MOST of your needs.

Before I bought my TL-S, I test drove the Passat V6 in a 5 speed. It was real nice but it just didn't do it for me. The acceleration was only OK and the interior was nothing special. After 10 minutes of driving on nice twisty back roads, I simply got bored! Even with a manual transmission and the 4 motion, it fell way short of the driving pleasure of the TL-S!
