Well my post was last on prev page so...
The RPMs increases if you accelerate harder getting more power out of the gear, the car delays the shifts to do this. If you let off the accelerator the car senses that you not trying to accelerate as hard and shifts up earlier. If there was that much slip wouldn't there be shudder instead of a smooth shift?
What is average shift on your car?
For me at average accel:
1-2 @15-20km/h 2400rpm
2-3 @40km/h 2500rpm
3-4 @55-60km/h 2500rpm
4-5 @ about 80-90km/h simmilar RPMs
These are just what I noticed most of the time, they vary of course with acceleration and such.

Hey IHC thank you for all the advice on this issue. I only had one question. On the 99 that you were working on, was he throwing any tranny codes? I have a lot of the same symptoms but just got the P0740 code. I have had no shutter issues but I do get the lag between shifts. Hoping that a 3x3, pressure switch change and cleaning the solenoid screens may clear that code. Just wondering if its worth it at this point. Thanks again for all your advice
After seeing how it fixed the '99 which I considered to be unfixable I would definitely try the fluid and switches. Normally I would say don't get your hopes up but after this last go around it will probably cure your issues.

I just did a 1 x 3 of Redline Racing type F, hoping it would take care of a delay/slip between 1-2 on my 99, with no noticeable change in teh way the car shifts at all. Once again..does anyone know if there is pressure switches for the 1-2 shift on a 99, and if so, could it actually do anything to help delay/slip?

I changed it last Friday, and I drive everyday. The other gears do feel like they may shift a little harder, but the 1-2 shift Im scared about isnt changing much. It sometimes shifts better when it's hot.

Thanks again IHC for all the advice. Did the 3x3 with Redline racing and noticed a impovement in all shifting accept 1-2. A few days later I did the pressure switches and that seemed to help even more. On a side note on the 99 4 speed, according to my Helms manual, they are the 2nd and 3rd switches. If anyone is having an issue finding these on a 99 I can send you some pics. The manual makes it pretty idiot proof. I'm going to try a solenoid filter change and see if that helps the 1-2 shift issue. All in all I think I bought some time with this tranny, but it's not a permanent fix for me. I can't complain though, I bought the car as a project with 150k on it for $1500. It now has 187k. If the tranny dies tomorrow IMO it still lasted a long time. With all of IHC's advice the rebuild will last at least as long.

If you have a rebuild you may want to check for a exterior filter to clean out before you do the rest of the fluid change..I read somewhere that on the rebuilds they should have one. Also in reading some of the results from cleaning the solenoid filter, I think its best to buy a new one as opposed to cleaning the old one. Did you change the pressure switches? Some of those rebuilds will throw the old parts right back on and the problem can still be there. Its about $90 or so for the '99 switches, a few dollars more than the newer ones, but it did make a difference. While I am changing out the filter I was going to check the lock up solenoid and the linear solenoid. Helms shows a simple way to test these and make sure they are working. I should be doing this Monday or Wednesday depending on when my parts arrive. I'll keep you informed.

you guys have me convinced to give it a try.
so what's the fluid change interval on redline or amsoil compared to z1? i've been doing a 3X4 every February with z1 on my post 2005 replacement (approx. 80K miles on new unit), which equates to between 20K-25K miles. do I still follow that schedule (which is easy to remember) or would I extend that period?

Its been about a year and +12,000 km now and everything is fine did my last drain and fill 3/3 a few months ago and everything ok. Amsoil Super Shift used, only issue is harder shifting while cold but that goes away pretty quick. 2000TL with solved 3rd to 4th shudder issue.

I'm convinced that the racing fluid [or type f to a lesser degree] has given me a free year and 15,000 miles. I was getting some flare going into 3rd and 4th. I changed pressure switches, cleaned solenoids and screens, adjusted solenoids, and replaced the external filter. Nothing made as much difference as the redline fluid. I used 1 racing, 1 lightweight, and 1d4 as recommended in the redline racing fluid thread. The trans shifted better with each change until I did the 4th one, then the flare came back again, possibly a little worse. I resigned myself to the inevitability of a rebuild until I stumbled across the optimum percentage thread. It sounded like bs to me, but I tried it anyways based on ihc and inaccurate's track record. The trans now shifts better than it did with 30,000 on it [I'm at 115,000 now]. My wife even notices the difference, and it usually takes cleaning the glass or new floor mats for her to notice anything. I've said it before, I'll say it again: Everyone should read the redline racing atf thread before choosing trans fluid. Thanks a lot to "I hate cars" and "inaccurate" for all the research, phone calls, etc.

Well its been good so far but about 2 weeks ago I started getting a rough shift into 2nd (pretty sure its 2nd, only happened a few times though) its a hard thud when it shifts and is quite noticeable.
History: Shudder into 3rd at 205k
- 3x3 of Amsoil super shift
- 3rd/4th pressure switches
- external fluid filter changed
The above fixed the shudder prob. Now at 223k
Gotta do some research, any info is appreciated.

Sorry for the really old thread revival, but the "Redline" Racing ATF fluid has definitely helped with our 2000 TL's original 185k tranny's shifting characteristics. (Better than previously switching to DW1) Next thing on the list is replacing the 3rd and 4th gear pressure switches. The 3rd Gen guys have been successfully doing this as routine tranny "PM", so for less than $100.....why not give it a try ?

I sold the TL with the redline in it, but we still service it. It's still on trans #1. I only changed the fluid once or twice after things settled down, but the redline stays red longer than either of honda's fluids. There is also substantially less to wipe off the drain plug magnet at changes.
