2000 TL power steering noise

I just change my timing belt on Sat., and in the course doing so, I removed the hose from the pump. After finished the timing belt job, reinstall the power steering pump hose and realized it would have air in the system. So I raise the car and let it run while turning it both ways, did seem to work for a bit and when I took it out for test drive, noise came back.

I also suspect it could be the pump, but is there a way to completely air out on the steering pump?

Bleeding the PS is turning left and right like you did, but most PS pump failed after TB replacement due to over tension the PS belt; if that was the case then you PS pump needs to be replaced or rebuilt, or replace the bearing.

You actuall didn't need to remove the PS hose to replace TB.

Thanks for the info, i'll check the belt again.. but it was snug tight the last time i checked it. I'm gona take off the belt and check if it has any play on the pulley, if all is good.. guess need a new pump.. since it has over 200k on it.. lol

to properly burp air from the ps system:
place cardboard under the front wheels to reduce friction
Start engine and turn wheels full lock one way- then about 5 seconds turning full lock the other way- and repeat
ck fluid level and watch for bubbles

Now it only make loud noise in the morning after 15 mins driving, but after shut off and restart after 3-5 mins.. no more loud noise.. hhmm.

My 2000 tl don't have that inlet plastic tubing on the hose, but i did replace the (pressure hose) seal on top of the pump. Maybe i should do it again trying different seal.

Update..! After taking a closer look on the inlet hose, it does have an adapter on it but it an aluminum housing, pull it out and replace the seal on it last night and did bleed it turning lock to lock.

However, this morning, same noise. Oh well, just have to live with it or until the system will air it self out after driving awhile.

the system gets the air out by following my directions which I got from the owner book--
Place cardboard under wheels to reduce friction to ground

in park- engine running- turn the wheel full to one side, hold 2 seconds then turn all the way to other side hold 2 seconds- turn all the way back
have helper repeat as you watch for bubbles or lowering of fluid level
it takes full lock to get the trapped air at the end of the steering rack

fluid level should be BETWEEN the lines

I try the method you mentioned, turning the wheel on the cardboard, turning lock to lock and gas it at 2-3k rpm.. I turn it lock to lock so many time last nite that it grind right thru the cardboard, I must have turn it about 20 times, and fluid level is good.. no dice.!

It only happen in the morning tho.. lesson learned... Don't disconnect power steering inlet hose when replacing TB, or maybe my PS is giving out.. Thanks for all the help..!

I dont remember saying 2000-3000 rpm
or to do it till the cardboard wore thru~

but I is a geetin older and may furget things,,,,,

to each his own for interpreting instructions and making new methods!

for all I know the higher rpm hides air--the book says nothing about additional rpm~
thats my concern on your methodology

I suspect ps pump failing
If willing to experiment (disclaimer- not my fault for anything you do)
Back in the day -ford exploders had ps whine,
dealer techs secret fix: 1 teaspoon of Slick 50 in the ps fluid and noise was gone!!

I join the bandwagon with the diagnosis of failed ps pump bearing- happened to me after a timing belt job (different car).

Odds are you have the belt too tight and put stress on the bearing. It doesnt take much to ruin the bearings on these pumps. I have gone thru about 4 of them learning the hard way. When i tighten the belt now i leave it loose! if it squeals from being loose i give it a 1/2 turn and see if it continues. If not i leave it. These pumps are FINICKY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

On a side note though they can be pretty much rebuilt on your work bench in 30 min or less for about 20 bucks (in the condition yours is in)

Thanks for all the inputs.. I’m gonna leave it as it is, hoping it will eventually air itself out for couple more weeks before replacing the pump.

you can hope that.. but its not true
you have burped the system
done

If there is further air, there is a leak somewhere allowing air in--that will contribute to noise and cavitation of the fluid

Happens to me at work all the time after changing the t belts it's pretty simple u have air in the system ur o rings on the inlet and out let hoses that go on power steering pump need to be changed then take the reservoir put it on it's sides after filling up with the 2 hoses on the bottom usually I just place it over the rad support fill it up then turn ur car on and keep putting ps fluid works every time just a little trick I learned after replacing acouple of pumps after t belt install!

Same here, maybe not the air or leak. I got the same noise in the morning starting engine and end up change with other P.S pump.
In my situation, it was not air going in it's pump bearing is damaged in inside due to over tight P.S belt,so like Cris suggest spend $20 for the parts or shop used one under $50 for whole set. Mine one was $45 from ebay and after changing noise is gone.
