Don't bother it'll sound like crap if you can even get it done and you're gonna spend 400-500+ for the cd changer and installation with new wiring. Just get a new headunit and custom bezzel to fit the area which the cd player will be removed. Get an alpine cda-9813 on the internet it's about 250.00 plus 20 shipping. The bezzel will cost you about 200.00. So there is your 470.00 and is going towards a far better headunit with hundreds of more capabilities and looks nice too.

Jimmy, you have an option to get a 2002 or 2003 TL Head unit/Radio that has the in dash 6-disk changer. 2nd option is to get like a Alpine s-634 cd changer, blitz adaptor and honda adaptor for the changer. Option 1 will cost about $200, while option 2 will be around $250-300. Keep in mind, this is probably the best way if you want to keep your sound system stock. I like my volume control on the steering wheel... hope this helps!

The alpine is a far superior headunit compared with stock Bose. The cda-9813 has v-drive capability which requires a direct connection your battery because of it's power handling needs. It puts out 23 watts RMS to each speaker, which by comparison to the stock headunit which I believe puts out 7 watts RMS to each speaker. The imaging and clarity that the alpine provides will make your music listening enter a whole new level. Alpine HU's are also extremely durable and last longer than most cars do. I have an old alpine HU 10years ago, can't remember the model now, but it cost 275.00 at the time and it still works like brand new. Also the alpine cda-9813 has 3 pre outs, as the stock HU has zero. You can't hook up an extra amp without getting a special modulator that is very hard to install. I did that first and it cost me 200.00 for labor and 40.00 for the part. The guy had to take off my entire dash and console just to get the modulator connected to my HU. The alpine cda-9813 also has Bass Engine Plus which allows you to customize your bass, it has mediaexpander for easy upgrades to either dvd, cd changer, etc. Do yourself a favor and check it out on either E-bay or electronicgiant.com and you will not be disappointed.

Wouldn't it also be most important to upgrade to better quality speakers though? Aside from the way the sound is equalized, if you have crap speakers, anything'll come out sounding like crap. ??

Where would you go to get the 2002 or 2003 stock headunit. I have the same problem with my 99 and all i'm looking for is a replacement. I have a wiring kit with a sub in the trunk, and i have an adapter to do so, will I be able to do all of the work myself? Please post a link or something where i can find the headunit.

Shit, dont spend all that money doing that...'cause you'll spend that much installing it.
I just simply bought an ipod and got an Fm radio transmitter and i can play all my ipod music, with really high quality. Or you can get the blitzafe thing and hook it up to the car...but this is more expensive than getting the $20 fm transmitter from radio shack.
why spend $500 to play burnt cds when you just can spend $500 and get/install a nicer radio system...or spend $100-200 on an ipod or any of those new mp3 players with 10GB memory +

I went for option one and got the new head unit.... and spent 900 bucks on it. Well... insurance paid for 75% of it. I love it, sounds great, and looks awesome. Not only that, but the convienence of having 6 indash.... wow, cant imagine life without one now.

Hey, did you get the head unit from the dealer? B\c if you waited, people usually sell them for around $200. Anyhow, sounds like you're enjoying it. I love mine and would do it all over again. It felt like a great upgrade for me too. Glad you enjoy it!

here is a solution, take the HU out, and when you are driving at highway speeds throw it out...JOKE, dont do it, you might hurt somebody.
one word: AFTERMARKET. or try to find 02-03 stock HU on ebay.
good luck.

Man if you really want to just play burnt cdr's just get ipod. If you want far superior sound then get a new headunit and speakers. It'll cost you to replace whole system, but just do it anyways if you got the cake cause stock system sucks. Blose really screwed up badly with the speakers they threw in the TL's. Go with Alpine HU and Eclipse Point Source 5 1/4, they will fit and sound far superior to Blose and getting them on ebay is fairly inexpensive. The install is where you will cry the most.

damn. i got the same problem. 99 cdplayer sucks. but i have an MP3 player with 512mb + 256mb expansion card. i just put all my mp3's in that little thing and got a FM transmitter. This costed me about 250 dollars and i didnt have to do any installations.
I tried bidding a few times on Ebay for a 02, 03 headunit, but always lost at the last few minutes. stock 6-disc is the only thing i want to go for. i'm not into any aftermarket HU since they dont look right on the TL desk.. but that's just me.

I FINALLY found CD-R's that play in the TL.
They are FujiFilm All Purpose CD-Rs with no speed rating written on them. I picked up a set of 20 cd's in cases (they come in an all blue cover) and they worked PERFECTLY without any hesitation. This was a few months ago. When I went to best buy, I saw what seemed to be the same CDs in a 50 pack spindle however after burning my first CD, it didn't play that well. I'm going to make a trip out to best buy and see if they still have the ones in the 20 pack. If they do, I'll buy one and if it works, drive back and buy five more and use them ONLY for the TL. Hope this helps...

Rosh

hey guys, i tried searching this and found a few solutions, but most were to upgrade the whole system. I was wondering if I can upgrade my stock speakers to better ones and still use the stock headunit to improve the sound quality. I didn't know if this is possible due to the # of ohms that bose speakers have. Anyone wanna shed some light on this? Thanks in advance...

Tell me if this is the one. I'm gonna burn like a few songs on it and give it a try. I'll come back and reply if it works or not.

I have an aftermarket stereo in my 99 TL now, but when I had the factory HU all I used were FujiFilm CD-R's. They worked perfectly!!! Other brands are acceptable as well, just stay away from the cheap no name brands...

First off, check out this:
https://acurazine.com/forums/showthread.php?t=103641
then i think the easiest and best way to do it is getting the alpine changer that i have in my signature below along with the blitzsafe adapter. Then all you do is plug the blitzsafe adapter into the factory head unit and the cd changer plugs into the blitzsafe adapter. Done and Done!!! You can mount the cd changer in the trunk and mine plays every cdr i even burned.
