1999 Acura TL with Idle Problems

I have recently jump-started a 1999 Acura TL 3.2 that has not been started in 12 months. The vehicle has 270,000 miles on it and ran perfectly the last time it was started.

When I started the car today, the engine runs very smoothly and strong (not rough) but the idle cycles continuously, on its own, from 1000 to 2500 RPM (it did this continuously for over 20 minutes). When I rev the vehicle as high as it will go, it peters out at 5000 RPM and falters. When I put the vehicle in DRIVE, the idle problem goes away and it holds very steady and smooth at 1000 RPM, and with the brake on, will rev strongly.

Any advice on the idle would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!

Welcome to Acurazine!

If idle is fluctuating it can be narrowed down to the IACV valve under the throttle body. It most likely just needs to be cleaned.

Yeah, an older car sitting for a year and not run....can be a problem sometimes.

~ Fresh premium fuel with a cleaner such as Seafoam will help the octane.
~ Make sure that all fluids and the battery are good.
~ Cleaning the TB intake, EGR passageways and IAC valve will help the idle smooth out.
~ Check the coolant's level in the rad and inspect the plugs.

what these guys mean is remove the throttle body assembly from car
on its bottom is a cover and inside the IACV- it clogs and does exactly what you describe
no need to buy an expensive new one when carb cleaner will cure the problem

welcome to azine-

After the cleaning is done try the idle relearn procedure, it worked for me on a few Hondas.

leave a TL sitting for a year and its going to harden the crud blocking small air slit in the IACV, screwing up idle

5000 is the rpm safety limit when in P or N

remove Throttle body assembly and small round cover on bottom, iacv is in there
see diy section for detailed help
