1457??? This doesn't exist!!!
I got a CEL and pulled a code on my scanner for P1457...which according to most charts I see for the 2nd gen tl, does not exist! Most other cars seem to list this code as a faulty evap canister or clogged EGR...
any ideas? if I reset it it doesn't always come back on right away, sometimes it take a couple hundred miles to come back on, sometimes immediately...
Any thoughts TLers?

P1457 is defined as evap. leak, canister system side. P1456 is an evap leak, fuel tank side. Try a gas cap, as they're cheap. Beyond that, there are 2 or 3 solenoid valves that fail. Probably the most common one is the cannister vent shut valve. Try searching those two numbers, there's been a fair number of mentions on here.

If you have 75k miles its ready for an EGR port cleaning
see DIY section on subject- the ports get plugged and must remove intake manifold from the car and clean it to fix
About 2-3 hour job
99s had only 1 port- very easily plugged
00 and on have 6 and still plug every 75

9932....I've been living with it for awhile, no problem except it doesn't crank up as fast as it used too..but still faster than my 3 series...has it posed any other problems for you?
01tl4tl, the EGR ports have been a direct cause for this code too? I hope so...cuz as much of a DIYer as I am...those multiple solenods are not looking very pleasant...I'd rather just clean the ports....
TLer trash...newb question...wtf is a canister and what does it do? =)
Thanks so much for the quick response! I haven't been here in awhile (since 3rd gen was still practically brand new)...but good to know that 2nd gen is still kickin strong!

good deal acurabum! What did you do to fix it? What parts do I need to start sourcing for?
I don't suppose there's a fix that doesn't require purchasing a whole new emissoins system?

good deal...thaks for the help!!! Looks like the replacement won't be as bad as I was worried it would be...I never replaced anything back near the rear though...hopefully its enough room to move it out.
So what does this evap canister do anyway?

Even though a gas cap is supposed to code 1456, there has been at least one person on this forum who cured code 1457 with a gas cap. That's why I still suggest it as a cheap gamble. Dealership, oem, gas cap, not aftermarket.

oddly enough...a local junkyard has an 01 CL type s that is wrecked in the front that I could probably pull a cap from and see...would a CL cap fit an 00 tl?

Clean your Gas cap and just reverse the o-ring of the gas cap ....this should give you a very good seal ..... if not buy a new one from Dealer ( only a few buck )
Evap Canister is just like a big filter ....it's very important not overfilling your gas , just stop when the first click from the pump nozzle ...force fill then gas will get into the Evap Canister and blocking it .

Im sorry- I cant imagine flipping an oring and expecting the other side not to have a crack or wear
Replace the gas cap- the right kind with the correct spring release pressure and 3 clicks to secure
Dealer item cant be that much~
2nd the opinion- -Never top off gas tank!- 1st click of the pump and thats it
especially summer heat
expands the gas in the tank and can push raw wet fuel into a dry charcoal cannister- soaking it-- when it dries it clogs itself
that small hole in the filler neck is the vent tube from the cannister- during the day it holds fuel vapors and returns them to tank when suction of engine running begins
