I've been told it will fit, but you would have to figure out the wiring. I've been wanting to do this for some time it's just I don't have the money

You will have to buy one with the Airbag, you cant swap yours over. The wiring probably wont be the same for the controls but that could be fixed easily

Out of curiousity, would it be any harder to put a steering wheel from another car on than it would be for a newer TL?

How about an RL wheel?

The bolt pattern would have to match up< and the Air Bag. Most steering wheels dont come with the airbag. You cant remove just the bag and place it in any old wheel. Also the 99-01 have Single stage airbags. The 02+ have Dual stage. You have to trick the Airbag ECU with some resistors. That and the color. While they look the same once in they may not.

Do you think there may be away to link the paddle shifters to the SportShift?

It would be very simple as long as you get the wires to work with the cable reel

Hmm, would this sort of thing be the stuff an average body shop could handle, or do you have to go to some sort of specialty place for these types of mods?

VERY easy to replace the steering wheel -- https://acurazine.com/forums/1g-cl-diy-faq-74/1st-gen-cl-steering-wheel-diy-w-pics-486041/

The wiring would be hard if you know what you're doing.. a stereo install shop or tuner shop would probably be your best bet if you were going to try and get it done. A body shop would probably install the wheel, but not do all the custom wiring.
