'03 TL-S vs Mustang GT

I was on the entry ramp from Wellington Road in London on to the 401 East. Looked in my mirror and there was a Mustang GT glued to my rear end. I took it to red line in second, checked up for a second to make the final part of the ramp which really bends, looked up to see him still right behind me, and planted my foot into the kitchen in 3rd gear as the ramp straightened. Funny thing happened - when I hit 5500 RPM in 3rd, the distance between us grew. Not like I was walking away from him, but I pulled away noticeably. I got up to 160 (KPH) and had to let off because a motorhome in the centre lane was smoking like a chimney. The Mustang kept his foot in it and went by me in the left lane. The Mustang was late model, not one of the new 300 HP +, more likely a "standard" GT pumping out 260 HP.

I KNOW this guy was doing his very best, but when I tell people this story, they think I am full of sh**. I'm not afraid to race anyone, and I don't only look for cars I can beat. In fact, a few days later, similar situation on the 401, and I got smoked by a Lexus, I think it was a 400.

Anyone else have any experience with Mustang GT's???

I'm not surprised, TL_Diplomat and I smoked a Mustang GT. I thought they would just go but this guy was definitely trying and having a hard time passing us.

Yeah I've taken a Mustang GT before too. That was when my car was stock too. GT Autos (with 260hp) are pretty slow... If the guy was driving an auto then it should be a pretty fair match between the TL-S and the GT with the edge to the TL-S. The GT Manuals with 260hp are faster than the TL-S stock though... All that extra torque from the v8 engine gives them the edge down low, and then the TL-S has a hard time catching up.

With some basic bolt-on mods (Intake and headers), you'd be a better match for the GT Manual until you hit >100mph, and then the GT would take over.

my cousin has a '02 mustang GT 5MT with modified exhaust and k&n drop-in filter.

he beat me by half a car lenght at 75mph.

i had i/e/h and also uncalibrated pulley (ECU not used to it yet..) on my TL-P.

i was kinda proud to be able to hang with a 260+ hp / 300lbs-ft car

good kill

I've owned both (2001 Mustang GT 5MT) and from track experience, my TL-S couldn't touch my GT. The GT was a fun toy car especially when you played with it (X-pipe, exhaust, new MAF, lots of suspension goodies) but the quality was definately not even close to my TL. Both are fun, TL is definately more pratical and easier to drive (not to mention easier to fit my 1 year old in). But I do miss my gobs of torque (I want a supercharger!).

Stock GTs are nothing special and I don't recall ever losing to one. I play with all common Mustangs except the Cobra. I know to stay away from that one. For all the others, its always been a win for me, and maybe one or two ties.
