03' TL-S Engine issues

Hey everyone...

I recently had someone charge me 300 bux to put some spark plugs in (my hands were tied, I was in the middle of nowhere and was having some series issues with this car). Needless to say, the plugs didn't solve the problem I was having.

The engine was really bad. I made it home and had someone hook it up to the computer. Turned out that all of my fuel injectors were broken, so they replaced them. The car ran great for about 2 weeks but now it's bogged down to the point that when I press on the gas, it hardly moves.

Someone told me that this could be my Oxygen Sensor.

I'd like to purchase a new one but notice there are many different brands and my car may need more than 1? My questions are:
  • What brand should I purchase
  • What's a reasonable price to pay
  • Can I change this myself?

Thanks for all of your help!

Yes... The engine light is on as well as the VSA light and the '!' triangle.

I took the car back to the place that charged me almost 700 to replace the fuel injectors. He hooked the computer up to the car and he said that it looks like the O2 sensor is bad (he didn't sound 100% sure though). I'm looking for a second opinion. Wouldn't he have noticed this when changing the injectors, or could it have just gone bad. Either way, I dont' want to give this guy more money for something that I might be able to repair myself.

90k. Trans was replaced around 60k. The trans appears to be switching gears just fine, and it's definetely not slipping.

Are you close to an AutoZone? Have them hook up an ODBII scanner and tell us what the codes are that are returned. We'll tell you what needs to be fixed.

o2 Sensor

If the O2 sensor is the issue...

* What brand should I purchase
* What's a reasonable price to pay
* Can I change this myself?
* Where in the car is it physically located
* Any special tools needed?

Thanks alot.

Well IF it was the 02 i would buy oem. Its located just before the cat, very easy to change no special tools needed. Justa big box wrench.

Did you do like the rest of us said and go get the code read to verify?

Thanks! That sounds easy enough. I will get the diags done tomorrow. I haven't had the time since I posted my original message.

If it turns out that I do need the O2 sensor, how much should I expect to pay for one of these OEM versions? Am I better off getting it online?

If you're going OEM, you'd be better off buying it online.

Hi guys...

I have a 'Pepboys' in my neighborhood so I took the car there. They charged me $20.00 to generate the computer codes. Here they are:

P0135
P0141
0300, 0301, 0302, 0303, 0304, 0305, 0306

As an FYI: I did spend $150.00 for the O2 sensors and put them in myself. Piece of cake but didn't fix the problem. The brand is Bosche.

Anyhow, hopefully someone can tell me what the above codes mean and what I need to do to fix them.

I did recently have the plugs and fuel injectors changed (about 1 month ago).

300 through 306 are engine misfire codes. According to that, you have misfire codes for all cylinders (301-306, and the generic misfire code 300). Could be bad spark plugs, bad coil packs, or some other ignition related component messing up.

135 and 141 have to do with the heater circuits for the O2 sensors. If you bought the right O2 sensors (they are heated) then you should erase the codes and they shouldn't come back. You did buy the right O2 sensors, right?

Erase the codes (pull the clock back up fuse on the passenger side for 10 min) then see if the light comes back on.

Also 1 thing to be carefull of is that many of the O2s sold in the parts stores are intended to be used in pairs. (From reading while tring to find one for mine)

PS you could have bought a OEM one for 85 bucks with the link posted above

First, what spark plugs were installed into the car? They should be of a double platinum type or Iridium with platinum pad on the ground electrode (type). I'd check the coils...

Second, why would you replace your fuel injectors?

Third, wouldn't the 02 sensors be covered under emissions warranty?

The plugs put into the car were 28 bux a piece! I'm used to paying maybe 3 bux. The place that put them in told me they were special plugs. 'Iridium w/ Plat' sounds right. They checked the coils after putting the new plugs in but the car was still running the same way so they took the coils out assuming they weren't the problem. They didn't want to charge me for them if I didn't need them.

I took the car to another place who told me that the injectors were all bad and 2 of them were physically broken.

The car is no longer under warranty. I have 95k miles on the car.

I did purchase 2 o2 sensors and replaced both of them. Thanks for the FYI on the 85$ OEM I could have purchased. I just needed something quick and couldn't wait. This car is running really bad right now. I'm tired of repair places jerking me around.

I'll try to remove that fuse and I'll see what happens. I'll come back in a little bit. You guys are pretty helpful, I really appreciate all of the feedback I'm getting here.

Well if its still running bad clearing the codes wont do any thing. It this point id say you have 2 choices. Clear the codes, have them re read to see whats coming up. OR bring it to the dealer.
Oh and i thinki would have gotten a 2nd opinion on the bad fuel injectors.

Put the fuse back in and the engine light is still on and the car still runs like crapola.

So the dealer is my best bet huh. Grrrr... so much $$$. This car is a headache. I always use premium/super gas and never let it get below say 1/4 tank. Mostly highway driven too. Always change the oil ontime / mobile 1...

What could cause these issues.

I have learned to trust these guys.. they know what they are talking about. Sometimes the dealer is your best bet, even though they are over priced.

Thats terrible, these people working on your car are just Grease Monkey's. They don't know whats going on. They dont know how to Diag a car. And not to mention that independent shops dont have all the "Up-to-Date" Info (Alldata or Shopkey) on your car. You're better off taking your car to a Honda/Acura dealer since they are "Technicians" that work on our cars specifically.

they charged you 300 to put in new plugs? even at 28 a piece that is 165, they charges you 135 to install plugs. those guys are crooks and should be shut down. take your car to the delaer. even the dealer won't charge you as much for the service you already had done and I doubt they would even have gone thru all the replacements as you have had done so far and they would have fixed yoiur car by now and you would have actually saved some money. good luck.
