03 tl non type S tranny swap

hello all,

Thanks for taking the time to look at this post. I know there are several dozen posts on similar topics however, i cannot find one that definitively answers my questions.

1. I see a few posts about swapping out the 06-07 accord 5sp trans into a type S tl, but nothing indicating that it will work well with a non type S.

2. Is there a DYI for this swap out.

3. is there anything else i need to know before attempting this swap if it will work for me?

Thank you guys for reading this and Thank you in advance for the info i have requested

1: YES it works in TL-P, i and many other TL-P owners have it. 06-07 V6 TRANS ONLY no 4CYL.

4. Since you have a tl p you will need to get some hose and tight clamps, I used t clamps. You have to loop the power steering rack which will make it former but I like it better.

I did it myself with the help of a friend that has all te right tools and is mechanically inclined. It's not difficult it's just alot to remove and the transmissions way a couple hundred pounds. It took us about eight hours to get it done and we weren't rushing

25812-P7W-A01 oil filter cooler/warmer gasket
25450-P7W-003 spin on filter that connects to the oil cooler/warmer assembly
those are the main things you need, I also got new 3 and 4 gear pressure switches, and transmission mounts.
pretty much sums it up swap instructions, steering will feel more sportier/firmer

this is the power steering part that you remove and completely bypass with a new hose.

Thank you very much for the information. My local transmission shop offered me a lifetime warranty on my bad transmission if i paid them $5000 to rebuild it. I dont want to keep going back to replace the known bad trans. This build seems like a better option minus the lifetime warranty.

P.S. they also said that the 06-07 honda trans was just as bad as the 03 TL trans. I am told by the honda service dept there is no issues with the accord 3.0L v6 5sp auto trans, like most of the posts on here have indicated.

The new trannies are definitely not as bad as our stock ones. So far, they have been quite reliable.

Peewizzle summed it up pretty well, but you can always ask specific questions as needed. If you are doing the swap yourself, I can write you up a full procedure of what to do and what you need.

The newer transmission did not have any where near the failure rate that ours had. I kept looking at shops to rebuild mine and some offered good warranties but I kept reading where people had to keep taking there car back after rebuilding it. Also swapping in the accord v6 transmission is cheaper. The install is not that difficult its just takes a little while

Hey guys sorry to bring up an old post, but at least im the one that created it to begin with. I recently bought a used "07 accord" transmission" this was ordered from my mechanic to his shop. When the trans arrived the receipt says 07-08 TL 3.2. I cannot get a good answer from the local Honda or Acura dealer as to weather or not I have what I originally wanted. Perhaps you guys can help me shed some light on this trans. If it is in fact a 07-08 TL trans and not the 07 accord trans I wanted, is this a problem? I know this sounds redundant as that Honda and Acura are the same parent company.

The trans has a VIN number on it a green plaque, enter the vin number on the carfax website and it will tell you what car it belonged to. The VIN should also be on the receipt. If not luck then take some pics and post them here.

Hello everyone! I don't mean to thread jack but I just had one question regarding this swap.
How hard would it be to do this in my driveway? I have a good set of tools(no air) and knowledge on the swap. But I don't have an engine hoist. I plan on using a jack to hold and slide the trans out but is it something that's doable?

As long as you get the front end of the car high enough off the ground, this swap can definitely be done in the driveway. You will need to somehow support the engine when you take the subframe off. I would recommend using a transmission jack under the transmission as it's pretty heavy and could easily tip off a regular floor jack.

I think I can rent something to support the engine. Removing the subframe is a little scary but I can get to that. Does the trans slide out easily? I was going to set a flat piece of wood between the jack and trans but ur right it might tip over. Ill look for something other than the jack. Now will I have to remove the J pipe and headers? I haven't been under there in a while lol

Hey Karanx7! Yes Im Hussam. Are you on the fb page?

There's no need to remove any exhaust components in order to drop the transmission.

Hey Ka7kid, While it may possible to replace your tranny in the driveway, why risk potential harm to yourself or the car ?

Find a friend that has some good tools and proper lifting support for the project, or ya may be sorry !

Yes definitely a helper is a must, The subframe its a 2 piece frame, just need to remove the front one not the rear one. Remember to unbolt the torque converter, shift cable and trans mounts before removing the subframe. Good Luck

Wanted to provide an update here as to what i am dealing with at the moment...Im now on my third transmission attempt in this car. The first one was miss labeled and wasnt from an 07 accord it was from an 08 TL which wont work for me. The second one was an 100k+ miles trans from an 06 accord, it had broken flanges where it bolts into the engine. As for the newest one my mechanic should be installing first thing in the A.M., I got super lucky and scored a 07 AV6 trans with 39k miles on it for $950. Crossing my fingers this one works out. If this goes well my mechanic is going to start doing a lot of these swaps as he has had several cars come in with no way to "fix" it for his customers.

Yeah, where's your mechanic located? I need this swap done asap and can't find a place to do it here in Indy.

That's a damn good price on a tranny with mileage that low. I hope it works out for you!

Ok.. its been 4 days of driving my car with the 07 AV6 trans installed. Im litteraly in shock how much of a difference this transmission made for my car. I cant believe i had to limp my car along for damn near 7 months dealing with the old transmission. Ive put almost 300 miles on this new install with no complaints up to this point.

This job was done in Washington State. near the Olympia area. If anyone wants exact location please PM, however, i can only receive 1-2 at a time before my box gets full.
