Talking "02" TL Gas Mileage

Yeah! I finally broke 15 MPG in my new TL! But that still sucks! After 2000 miles I figuered that I should at least be at 18 or 19 MPG. Does a K&N filter bring my mileage down? I noticed a definite increase in throttle response after putting it in, but shoudl I sacrifice such a decrease in mileage? What kind of MPG does everyone out there get on a non-engine modified 01 or 02 TL?

Here's my mileage so far on my 02 TL-S. I've been stomping on the gas and redlining the engine more and more these days, which explains the declining mileage... I need to relax, but this car just wants to play all the time!

Wow, daverman, sweet spreadsheet... too bad I'm not good enough in Excel to do that, I'd love a chart like that!!

Anyway, my first tank of gas took me 344 miles and ended up being a tick over 26 mpg as an average. I'm not sure why everyone's mileage is so low. I haven't been redlining the car, but I cruise at around 75 - 80 to and from work (depending on traffic). All this with the AC on!! I'm happy b/c I'm filling up less then when I had the CL!!

try taking the resonator out. that should help too.

w/ my K&N i was first getting like 20~22. w/ my headers probably still 22 max. but after taking the resonator out im hitting like 23.5~24mpg city week after week.

We've been averaging 25 mpg in mixed driving. The last all highway trip we took yielded 31 mpg.

The car definitely gets worse mileage when I drive it, especially when the wife's not in the car with me

I think it depends on your level of city driving. I drive 48 miles a day to work almost all of it highway, but I begin and end in city traffic. I have averaged 25 mpg almost exactly every tank. Last weekend I made a 150 mile trip on all highway, and then the rest of the tank was my normal routine. Just that little change pushed me up to 27 mpg. On my wifes car she drives 100% in the city and gets 14 mpg, but when I drive it to work I can get about 19 mpg. I push my car pretty hard sometimes too, but I think that has less of an effect than the amount of city driving you do.

I've gotten 27 mpg on a road trip (mostly freeway driving)...at 80~100mph.
In the City...I have gotten as low as 15 mpg...all city driving...stop n go and turning off the engine and starting...idling...etc.
The usual mix of 60 miles freeway/day and about 30~40 city driving...and a little bit of racing mixed in...18~22.
Hope that helps a little.

I think something is wrong with you car! or that you drive very agressive (In other word you have only TWO SPEED- Full Trottle & Stop). You might want to get your car checked out. I think in worst case, you should be getting least 19 MPG but 15 MPG does not make sense. I use to have 00' TL and it use to get 21-24 mpg. I did lot of mixed driving (city & freeway). Now I have
02' TL-S and it seems like I get little bit worst mileage. Its betweeen 19-22. Also, I just added Comptech Exhaust recently and it increased my MPG to 21-23. I think adding Intake/Air filter, Headers or Exhaust should not make you MPG worse. If anything, it should increase you MPG. In all the cars I driven
(VW Sciracco, Isuzu Impuse Turbo AWD, Maxima, TL, and TL-S), adding one of the following above increased my MPG.

SOMETHING IS DEFFINITELY WRONG

I get 19 in the city and 29 on the road w/ 5-20 oil.

I got 16.5 in the city and 27 on the road w/ 10-30 oil.

Check the oil?

If you drive aggressively with racing acceleration...and copious amount of VTEC revving...your mileage will decrease...simple.

Question Do you think

do you think maybe a good highway run might make it better?
I mean doing alot of city driving with traffic...has its toll on the car..and a highway run would be good to give the car some work.

i dont know...just thinking

TL Mileage

Thanks for all of the replies. To answer one of the questions, I did have my oil changed at 1,000 miles. I guess my main concern is that if I take my car to the Acura dealership with the K&N filter installed, and ask them whats up, they will tell me it's the K&N filter. If I go in with the factory filter installed and they perform any computer adjustments to my engine, then I will have defeated the purpose of buying the K&N filter. To me, it is one of the simplest and least expensive modifications to enhance this already wonderful engine. I'm simply looking for improved gas mileage at this point, but it doesn't make sense that I have to remove the K&N to accomplish it. I am overwhelmed at the improved throttle response it gives this vehicle - more than any other car I have owned.

The only underhood mod for me so far is a K&N drop-in filter. I just returned from a trip to Watkins Glen, NY and on the 700 mile round-trip jaunt I averaged 30 mpg. The filter does not seem to affect mileage at all.

By Acura? What oil did you use? I think 1000 miles is a little low for the first change. Theres a break-in period. I changed mine at (the Acura recommended) 3750 mile mark.

Question

What's a resonator, and how does it affect your gas milage? Additionally, where is it located on the engine, and how do I get ride of it for improved milage?

A resonator is a device which helps to muffle the noise that your engine makes. It's basically a tuned air space into which your exhaust gases flow. As a side effect the resonator adds backpressure into your engine, making it more difficult for the engine to expel its exhaust.

Removing the resonator will allow exhaust gases to flow more freely, but your car will also be noisier.

Cool

Better get it checked or try easing up on the accelerator. We're getting about 25 mpg on new cars. Hers has only 340 and mine has 280. Of course there are no hills down here and real city driving is a concept not a reality here.

I usually get about 200 miles on a tank...drove to CT from DC...now about 380 of this was highway...but got 426 on the way there...422 on the way back (granted I usually get gas as soon as the light comes on).

TL Mileage/Top Speed

At the 1,000 mile mark, I had the oil changed at the Acura dealership. I just recently hit 17.5 MPG, on my last fill up. I still think it is low. Maybe I just drive it too hard. I did have it out on a stretch of open road last week. I was pretty impressed that at 135 MPH (indicated on speedometer) it was still climbing strong. This car should be good for 145-150MPH top speed. Any body agree with me? Also, how off is the speedometer at those speeds. I know that my speedo is accurate at 60, because I have matched it against one of those portable radar units the police set up on the sides of roads.

Question resonator

Daverman, thanks for the info. Where is this thing located, in the exaust or forward? Additionally, how hard is it to take out?

What kind of MPG does everyone out there get on a non-engine modified 01 or 02 TL?
I've been consistently getting 22mpg with A/C always on and a mix of city and highway. It jumped to 24mpgon my last fill-up. Just before then I dropped in a K&N, but the weather cooled off a bit which has allowed me to drive around w/o A/C.

I'm expecting around the same at my next fill up.

So bottom line is my mileage has jumped up, but I don't know what to attribute it to. It's most likely the fact that the AC has not been on.

By the way odometer reads 4,300.
