'02-'03 Cup Holders

I've seen on a bunch of forums that people with older TL's have been swapping out their cup holders with the '02-'03 cup holders. What's the difference? Why is the new one better than the old?

The newer ones are more "cup" like that allow the base of the drink to fit down into a sleeve; unlike the old ones, which are pretty flat and have one small insert (which just wobbles around and doesn't do a lot of good). This makes the cup less likely to tip and thus is a better design. I've done this to my TL and it works great. I highly recommend it since it’s about $5 to do, and worth ever cent (you only need to spill a cup of coke once on your leather seats, shifter, carpet, etc once to see the upgrade is a good idea….)

Are the 01 cup holders the same as the 02 and 03's? I thought I read in another thread that the newer cup holders started in 01?

Thanks

Exactly. The dealer sold me one for under $5 and it was special ordered. It's really easy and all you need to do is trim some tabs (they're really small and no big deal - you could do it with a file or some old scissors you don't care about any more) to make it fit perfectly.

ShivaAG2000, basically, go to your Acura dealer and tell the person working the parts counter that you need this part number: 77237-S0K-A02 If you just tell them you need the 02-03 holder, they may get confused and try to sell you the whole assembly (which is the doors and everything) for like $80 (this happened to me a few times at separate dealerships). If it costs more than $5, tell them to look again or just give them the part number because they messed up. Also, make sure they do not order you 77237-S0K-A01. This is the part number to the cup holder in the 99-01 (this also happened to me, so I have an extra 99-01 holder ).

I don't think there was one just for the 01's. I think 99-01 got the same holders with the little can/cup insert, and the 02-03's got the revised version where the holders are deeper and do not have (or need) the insert. So, chances are, unless someone swapped out your holders before you got the car (that is, if you're not the original owner), then they're the stock cup holders that don't work too well. But, then again, this really depends on you and what you put in the holders. If you don't experience any issues with cups tipping, then you may not want to do it. But then again, if $5 could reduce the risk of you dumping a large coke from Micky D's in your car during a sudden stop scenario, would you see that as worth it?

Got a '02 for my '99 from my handy dandy acura dealer parts department, and he had one in stock. According to him, this item got to be so popular for just such a switch out that he now keeps several in stock just for this. Mine was about $7.50 a year ago.

not sure if this was mentioned in the part of the thread from 2004. but you will have to file down the plastic nibs on the outside edges of the cupholder to get it to fit well in the 99.

probably the best $8 i spent modding my car. def worth it, my cups will never tip over now.
