00 TL stumbles in hot weather

Under very mild accel, the car stumbles, worse in hot weather. This has happened since new but gotten worse over the years. I'm handing down my 00 TL, 85k to my son and he's taking it accross country for his first new job. Dealer recommends 90k tune up for about $2600!! Includes timing belt, plugs .... . Is this reasonable? Do the timing belts really fail, or is this a money maker for them? Could the stumbling problem be the tranny recall problem? Other than this, the car runs great. Any advice appreciated.

Look at the owners manual and do the 90k tune up yourself...spark plugs and such are very easy to install/fix/change/inspect...most of the stuff they say they do is fluff.

shit that is a rip off!!!! you could do the timing belt for about $800-$1000 and the other stuff you can do yourself. Just get them to check the transmission and the fluid. you can replace the spark plugs yourself very easy with a ratchet and sparkplug socket...the other stuff is all $$$ for the dealership.

First off, the timing belt service isn't required 'til 105k miles, and even then it still has plenty of life. Fsttyms1 is on his original belt and he's got like 190k miles on his '00.

My advice, if the car is running well now, don't waste time fixing it up for no good reason. Just do the usual maintenance stuff, like oil change, transmission fluid, coolant, etc... and these cars will run for a long time.

If you must get it done, then take it to a different shop. Independent and franchise shops can do the same level of work, for much less. And it won't void your warranty.

Kris is actually closer to 200k on his original belt.

I agree with Pure Adrenaline. That is way too pricy. Just stick to the normal maint that the manual recomends. Plugs probably wouldnt hurt. But any independant mechanic will be just as good and ALOT less. That dealer is bending you over and should be illegal for that price.
