$850 + taxes for timing belt ??

Hello everyone:

I am new to this forum and have spent quite some time now looking for the average cost to replace the timing belt on a 2002 3.2 TL Type S Acura.

My car has got 109600 miles on it and since I bought it used, I could not find the maintenance history for this car. I read in the manual that typically the timing belt needs to be changed after 105K miles.

I am planning to change the timing belt and spoke with 3-4 Acura dealers in this regard. The best deal that I could find is:

$850 + taxes

for
Timing belt
Water pump
Drive belts (power steering pump, air conditioning compressor)
Tensioners (Idler pulley and the tensioner)
Antifreeze

Does the deal seem reasonable to you folks?

Please help me out. Give me suggestions to get the timing belt changed for cheap.

Your help will be highly appreciated.

Why would replacing the timing belt service include new mounts?

Ask the local Honda dealer as well- they can work on the TL- when I still had my 00TL (until March 2006), the above service would cost $675 before taxes.

I think the side motor mount is right there- or right there in the way, when doing the timing belt. So if its bad- easy to replace right then at no extra labor charge

Often when the transmission gets replaced- cars need front or side motor mounts- just a wear item. Its life with a sports car

Its always a good idea to look in the phone book for a local Acura independant repair shop, they charge less per hour labor rate - get their quote and ask to see custmoer comments on their shop.

Got timing belt changed

Finally I got my TL's timing belt changed for the first time. The dealer said that some cracks had started to develop on the underside of the belt.

Car details:
'02 3.2TL Type-S
KA5AT
110500 miles

Got the work done from a Honda dealer.

$675 for timing belt, water pump, power steering belt, alternator belt, seals, radiator coolant.

$110 (additional) for tensioner and pulley.

$29.99 for oil change.

Mounts not included in this work.

Final price - $675 + $110 + $29.99 + taxes = $865

I hope this info would help other members who want to get the above work done.

I would like to thank all Acurazine members who replied to my query. I love this forum. Great people and great info!!

are the the otehr belts and seals req'd? I was told by a local mech that tensioner, water pump and timing belt are all that I need to replace...mentioned nothing about pulleys, seals, alternator belt, or power steering belt.

Ok. To get to the timing belt you have to remove the PS belt and Alt belt. SO you might as well replace those (and belts arent expensive) The tensioner for the timing belt isnt a bad idea to replace. That wears out and good bye motor. Seals for the h2o pump should be a no brainer.

ah ha...ok...do the ps and alt belt tend to go bad or rot that often? Is it easy to get to? If so, I will prolly just have the mech do the timing belt, h20 pump and tensioner, then do the ps and alternator belt on my own. I think doing the whole thing is a lot for a novice like me to try and do on my own in the dea of winter, but I would like to definitely learn moer about where and what gets replaced

The question is why would you do it when he has to take them off to change the timing belt? Just buy new ones and have him reinstall the new ones when its time

Well it was originally for the sake of me learning something new without going all out into the breakdown for doing a timing belt. However if he has to remove it all to get there then I guess the best I can do is let him do it.

You can still do it. I was just wondering why you would want to if he has to take it off in the first place

I applaud any efforts to learn about your car.

The mechanic may be willing to show you how the accessory belts are changed- where the bolts are etc, just so you know how if one ever breaks on a trip.
Better to save the layers of skin on your hand by letting him do it.

Have all the parts done at one time and then its done right- especially when a pro is doing it.

No, A baby pig crawed in your engine bay to stay warm at night and when you started the car in the morning you woke it up and it got scared and squealed then ran off . Sorry I was bored.
