$32000 worth of aggravation

in the last month i had my 99 3.2TL i have taken it to the dealership about 3 times for the same friggin problem that the check engine light comes on with the code reading 1456 or 1457 got an opinion from another tech who also checked underneath my car completely for a leak and didnt find any so just resetted the light and tightened the gas cap for Free ! 4 days later the light comes back on so i take it to the dealership got charged $80 and they did the same process and installed a new fuel cap and the next day the ****ing light comes back on !!! so i gotta take it back tommorow and the them people wouldnt even give me a loaner to drive so i am stuck without a car. I am so pissed about this whole thing so i just had to vent but is there anyone else here who has gone through the same experience and knows how to get this problem fixed??

Bottom Line: i refuse to believe that a $32 grand car check engine light would come on just because of a stupid plastic cap not being tightened which ofcouse i rotate more then 4 clicks

No problems with that here... it seems that you need a new dealer to go to My dealer ALWAYS gives me a loaner, no matter what i come in for, even now that my car is out of warrenty.. just make an appointment, ask for a loaner and there i go.. nice RSX or TSX as a loaner.

Sorry about the problems, but I also get loaners, even if just for an oil change.

If you live in the Northern suburbs of Chicago, try McGrath's Acura in Glenview or Woodfield's Acura in Schaumburg. I always get a loaner when I take my car there.

Document this Lemon Law states that if you take the car back to have the same problem fixed 3 times or more within 30 days or 6 time in the last year you can make the dealer buy the 'lemon' back from you. That perhaps will get their attention and treat you with more respect.

I too in Kansas City get a free loaner whenever I get anything done at the dealership. You just need to call in advance so they can reserve one for you. Questionaires that Acura mails out speaks well from a feedback perspective. DOCK EM HARD when you get the questionaire. The dealers are rated based on your satisfaction scores. Good Luck with the gas cap.

the gas cap can cause a CEL becasue the car can't maintin the proper gas pressure. 4 clicks seems fine though, there's something else going on.

Find out what those codes mean first before just spending more money

Those 2 numbers are different. You need to find out what code you pulled out first.

1456 -> Fuel Tank System leak
1457 -> Control Canister System leak

How old does a car have to be for lemon law to apply? His car is 4 years old. Is there no limit?

it depends on the warranty our transmission have extended to 7 years 100,000 miles. Our basic coverage is 4 years 50,000 miles, if you are a little out of the warranty range they will fix it if you remain persistent. IF INDEED THERE IS A PROBLEM, they will work with you to resolve it

Appreciate all the replies nice to know there are people who understands lol.

Songoku: the first time the scanner read 1457 but continental claimed it was 1456 so now i am not completely sure but i will take it to my buddy shop and let him scan it again.

WWW: i know woodfield acura is not only very competitive but also was willing to give me a loaner for an oil change. I take my car to Continental since my car was bought new from there along with all service done by them and the dude told me he needed 10 days advance notice for loaner and that too as a favor .

well i am gonna give them one last chance to fix this problem but i am gonna give them a bad service review for sure . Anyway my car is in the paper for sale now i might upgrade to a 2k1 coupe S or maybe a 00' 323ci bimmer.

Hey TL Navi, it sounds like you got a similar problem as my previous car (Audi A4 1.8T). My engine check light consistently comes on and the service guy told me to tighten the gas cap with 5 clicks or more. I was like "What the H=ll?" I told them that I tighten mine at least 3 clicks. They were like "You need to tighten at least 5 clicks". Anyway, I was not in the mood of arguing with them, so I took their word for it. After a few days, the engine light came back and again I took my car back to service. Finally, I had some results. What they found out is that there is a small leak on top of the gas tank and they said that they needed to replace the gas tank. The car was basically not driveable (too dangerous according to the service guy). So I had a loaner for 3 weeks (gas tank was backordered). After the gas tank replacement, my check light was finally gone. They told me that to find the problem, they had to pressurized the gas tank with some smoke and basically observe any smoke coming out of the tank.

Maybe, the next time you take your car in to service, ask them to do the same (pressurized the tank with smoke and observe).

It doesn't mattery how expensive the car is. I work for Lexus and that damn check engine light comes on more than you know becuase of the gas caps. They have actually redesigned them to make it next to impossible if the cap is put on for it to set the light off. Good luck finding out why your check engine light is coming on.

from my knowledge...this falls under that consumer protection law...according to that law...if you have same problem 3 times or more in ONE month...company is supposed to give you a new car or something like that...im serious though...look into it...im not sure if its only valid on major problems, but still...it can't hurt....

look into it...and if im right...go get a new ride and paypal me $100!! hehe...good luck man...

aiite... my 99 TL had the same problem!~ CEL came on, dealer did something (of course, i got a loaner car). a couple days later, CEL came on again, dealer did something else. (again, another loaner car)... a couple days later, it came on again. this time, i kinda yelled at them and they thoroughly checked the car and told me that there was something wrong with the emission... and some parts needed to be replaced.... for free~ the same thing happened to my friend's 2000 accord as well, and the honda dealer did the same thing @ no charge although the car was out of warranty period.
