Angry $1k for fixing one HID headlight!

Well, yesterday my passenger side HID went out so I stopped by the dealership to check on a the exorborant cost of a new HID bulb. I figured i would be able to replace it myself.

Well, I get to the dealership and find that the bulb is not refundable if its not the problem. Hmmm, $220 for an HID bulb...non-refundable, AND its a pain in the but to pull the bulb to even check it? Ok, I'll just pay them to repair it. Yeah, labor cost was expensive, but at least I would know it would get fixed.Did not get done last nighht because of the busy holiday schedule AND teh fact that I had no appointment.

This morning I get there to get the car and they tell me the bulb was not the problem, the ingnitor and amplifier for the HID power needed to be replaced. In addition to the cost of labor and the bulb, final cost? $975.

Ouch. No extended warranty covers it nor does any insurance. I guess I cant wait until my next headlight goes out.

Damn! It isn't that hard to replace and the bulbs are cheaper online...$220 is a lot of money... you can get a brighter 6000K bulb for half that price. The other parts are just as easy as screwing them onto the bottom of the headlight... or at least for 02/03.

well, i prefer not to modify my headlight assembly so I went with stock. Yeah, it sure does feel like I could have replaced an entire headlight set for that price, but...oh well, gotta have the lights working for the holidays while i drive around at night alot. It really is the ignitor and amplifier that increased the cost so much. They actually discounted all the parts to "jobber" rate for me as a courtesy..I can only imagine what it whould have cost at full retail. Oh well, live and learn I guess. What sucks is, bith my cars have HID's...not looking forward to the next one dying on me.

Last night I saw a 02-03 WDP TL w/ its driver side headlight out & I wondered why that guy didn't get it fix.

Damn, now I know why. Probably the dealer quoted him that same price. OUCH!

Hey yu888, have you noticed that the bulbs are different colors now? As I recall, new OEM HID's are a bit brighter and yellowish but get more blue with usage. It has something to do with the erosion of one of the electrodes in the capule and how it affects the shape and position of the arc.

all hid bulbs turn bluer along with decreasing light output as you use them. I believe it it called colorshifting.

Damn, I blew out one of my inverters (my own fault), and it cost me $180 for the part, and I changed it myself.

That price is ridiculous

6000K HID bulbs are NOT brighter. They are bluer.

I had a similar problem with the ignotor & inverter but I wasn't charged anything. The service guy said it was covered under warranty. In fact, the bulb was replaced too since the guy said it may or may not be damaged, but that they didn't want to take any chances or possibly have to service it again.

Got a TSX loaner at no charge too.
