Tire Pressure Monitor System

My RL is just one week old. After years of being a real stickler for regular tire pressure checks, I'm happy to have the TPMS. Of course, old habits die hard, and I got out my trusty digital tire pressure gauge and checked the tire pressure this morning after a chilly overnight. I found a 2 psi difference between my digital gauge and the TPMS on the car. (My gauge showed 32 fronts, 30 rears, while the TPMS indicated 30 fronts, 28 rears. Has anyone else experienced this? Can this system be adjusted? Which should I trust.......new technology or my trusty gauge? Any input is appreciated.

I recall seeing a setup screen for the TPMS on the hidden menu screen on the Nav display, I didn't take a real good look at it, but it appeared that adjustments could be made there

Agreed - though I have found, the hard way, that even trusty gauges can themselves become off a bit. Keep in mind that the intent of most TPMS is not to actually provide a precise measurement of the tire pressure but rather to track it at a macro level to sense when a large change takes place (typically down, though my 'vette warns on high pressures too) as the runflat tires may shield the driver from noticing a low pressure situation.

If your desire is to accurately track your tire pressure then stick with the trusty gauges.

yes, you can access it by holding down three of the buttons on the console for 5 seconds, check out the 'Secret Menus' thread for details

I wish us Canucks had our TPMS in psi instead of the silly kPa. I dont know one Canadian who uses kPa. I realize it is the metric way but damn, we aren't fully metric here in Canada so don't make everything metric. Same goes for CDN car companies when they list dimentions in mm...like anyone here uses mm for their measurements. hehe

I do agree with karl that the system is more for making sure there arent any issues with the tire pressure rather than using it to get a truly accurate reading.

Gauge discrepancy

My handheld digital gauge reads 2-3# higher than the TPMS. I am going to cross reference 2 or 3 hand held gauges to get a better feel for which is inaccurate.

I suspect that the TPMS readouts err on the side of caution by design and therefore will read 2- 3 psi lower than the actual pressure. This gives you a couple of psi additional warning if your tire starts to go flat.
