Sway bar links vs. Sway bar bushings

OK, my RL has been making some knocking & creaking noises going over bumps, etc. I've been told by 2 separate mechanics that new sway bar end links will take care of the problem.

I've been doing some searching on these forums and have found some who have just replaced the bushings, not the entire link.

Is there anyone who has just replaced the bushing who can comment? The bushing are considerably less than the end links. I don't have a problem replacing all of the sway bar end links if that's the only solution but if all I need are bushings, then why not just do the bushings. None of the sway bar links are broken so it's just the bushings that seem to be worn.

Any comments would be much appreciated.

So, you know the "link" is the rod attachment and the "bushing" is the, yeah you do. If the rod(s) aren't broken, this is darn tootin' a bushing replacement and an easy one. It's so easy that you might consider swapping in an 09/'10 rear swaybar with the new bushings that fit it (same outside, bigger bore hole for larger bar).

I would only sugest sway bar change if your going to do front and rear. People should not cheep out and only do the rear because its easy!

Agree, but the front sway bar change is quite an undertaking. I think engine removal is required.

I would suggest swapping out only the rear sway bar is a great idea, and I'm one those who "cheaped out" and did it. Hell, yes and 30 years of road-racing experience tells me the car handles better than oem with the rear stabilized a little more(it's not magic).

It's not enough of a performance upgrade that the expense to install the front bar met my criteria for dollars to effect/need, but it's an excellent upgrade for the money, out back.

Guys, this isn't the sway bar I'm talking about, it's the sway bar end links. So I can just replace the bushings without replacing the entire link?

Yes, you can.

The bushings are a few bucks, the same price as the bushings sized for the '09 and newer (those prices are listed in the swaybar upgrade thread).

You may be right but I'm sure it feels way better with both new sway bars at once. Its kinda like just changing your rear shocks to A-spec and leavig the front stock

Well, I ordered the sway bar end links, all 4. I might pick up some bushings too. Spent $120 on the endlinks but if I can replace just the bushings without too much trouble, I'll just return the end links and save a bit of cash.

engine removal not required the subframe and exhaust have to be dropped down if your replacing the sway bar. but sway bars rarely go its usualy the bushings and the links at the end

Hey,

1) Anyone who replaced rear sway bar bushings on 2010 RL(or similar), did the RR and LR sides matter? I found online OEM bushing but title only mentions "rear bush" which leads me to believe it is for both sides. Link to the part: https://www.acurapartsforless.com/oe...er-52306sjaa11
Interesting thing though, I have an image of my right rear side and it shows RR and an arrow on the bushing. (image below). That is where confusion comes if these bushings are different for each side.

2) Also do bolts are required to be renewed or old ones can be used if in good shape?

Left and right bushings are the same. You can reuse the old bolts.

Great, thanks!

I am still trying to figure out the thumping noise in the back when driving on uneven roads/patches on the pavement. Do you think the bushing looks deformed a bit on the picture?

It looks okay to me. However, it is cheap and easy to replace so if you want to, definitely do it. Before you do, however, adjust the e-brake as it may help resolve the noise issue. Read here --> https://acurazine.com/forums/2g-rl-t...tening-772060/

I will inspect the parking brake cable as mentioned in the thread. The thing is that front and rear brakes, rotors were all serviced at the dealer(by the previous owner) last year. Many users in the thread report some metal clanking noise, but I hear a thump which mimics shock or bushing issue. Thank you.

gotcha. How many miles do you have on your RL and has the shock/strut ever been replaced?

Vehicle has a little over 111K miles and looking at Acura Service dept. history, there is no mention of any strut/shock replacement. I recently took the car to tire shop to install new TPMS sensor, but while car was jacked up, I looked at the rear suspension and took pictures.(the photo of bushing was one of them). The left rear shock does have a small weepage. The one on the right rear doesn't show, but maybe it has already leaked out or is in good shape. I checked by pushing on the car's rear and there is no abnormal bounce or any extra play to warranty a blown out shock. Here are some images:
