Michelin Pilot Sport A/S Plus

Just got these a little over a week ago. They're supposed to be great in wet driving conditions.

Bought them at Discount tire for $917 mounted and balanced, not including a $70 mail-in rebate (actually $847). They're advertised as an Ultra-Performance tire. The website speed rating shows Z, but I think they're actually a W rating, up from the V rating on the stock Michy Energys.

I have to say that I'm very impressed with these tires. MUCH MUCH quieter on grooved highway pavement. Ride is slightly firmer and I noticed a little more responsiveness. Aggressive tread pattern with a 45K mile warranty.

Still early in my ownership, but so far I would recommend these as a upgrade to the OEMs.

What size did you get. I cannot remember what wheels you have?

I think you have the best all season tire out there in that size!

Be interested to hear further reports as time goes on.

Thanks for the review... I've been thinking about putting these on to replace the 255/35ZR19 PZeros that will be coming on my new car in December. They're $250/ea at Tirerack at that size.

What new car are you getting?

Where in NoVA do you get your tires installed? I have been trying various different places over my many years here, and all have issues so far.

Oddly enough, the best place I've found in 8+ years, 3 cars, and I dunno how many tires, has been the Sears automotive center in Landmark Mall. They price match, and the road-hazard warranty gives you no questions asked repairs with nothing out of pocket. Free balancing for the life of the tires, too.

Follow up on these tires. I repeat everything I originally stated. Much quieter tire. Great in wet weather and very good feel.

It'll be interesting to see how they do when the snow flies, but based on the aggressive tread pattern, I'm thinking they'll be fine.

Hawks, are the uni-directional? Can they be rotated or only swapped front to back?

Before the next rainy season, I am looking to replace my OEM Michelins and quieter is my priority. I think it will be between these and BS Serenties.

Thanks for the update! I purchased them for my A4 and they'll be going on this Saturday morning. The Pzero Neros it came with are amazing. Soooo sticky, and pretty quiet - even in wet pavement. I look forward to getting the Pilos Sport AS Pluses in there before the first fleck of snow.

Yes, they are uni-directional. You can only swap them front to back. No crossing. The tread pattern reminds me of the old Goodyear Aquatreads.

I just got some yesterday, with my new 18" ebony A-Spec wheels!

Only driven to and from the dealer, but I'm liking the way they ride so far. Probably a tad noisier than the old tires to my ears, but nothing to complain about.

GoHAwks, are yours 17" or 18"?

Well, I wash and wax my car this weekend. Yesterday when I park the car I had the wheels cut to one side and I notice what looked like a piece of metal the size of a quarter in the tread. I get closer and it is stuck in there pretty deep but by the looks of it, it had been there a while. I thought it looked like the head of a bolt that was worn down quite a bit, but the tire was holding air.

I get home and try to pry it out, but it's not budging. Since it's holding air, I figure I would just get up early and swing by Discount Tire to get it repaired since they offer free lifetime repairs.

They take the tire off and dismount the tire from the wheel. The tech then calls a bunch of the other guys over and they're just staring at the inside of the tire. I'm thinking to myself.. Uh-oh this can't be good.

They bring the tire in and show me that I ran over a CO2 cartridge!! The rounded end was what was showing through the tread.

Even though the damage was in the tread, the hole generated by the cartridge was too large to be safely repaired. So a one month old tire is basically trash. I didn't buy the road hazard warranty, but they're going to replace the tire for $46 mounted, but they have to order it.

In the meantime I've driving around with that bright yellow spare.

Man that's a fantastic deal!
I got mines mounted on Saturday on my A4. Certainly not as sticky as the Pzero Neros, but I'm happy with their dry and wet performance. Good stuff.

Oh, and I bought the road hazard warranty
I've used it too many times on previous cars to not buy it.

I have had the OEM 17" size Michelin Pilot Sport A/S PLUS tires on my 06 RL for about 3 mos.....Pohanka Acura did the changeover as they have done about 3 or 4 changeovers on my two Acuras over the past 6 years. They do great work.

I have already put 16k miles on these tires. They were Outstanding today in about 2" of fresh slush and snow....watched a Hummer on 22's (?) slide all over the place coming out of the Redskins Ashburn training park today while my RL glided by as if it were on rails.

Tires do make a slight hum on some fresh pavement "Michelin Sound of Security", otherwise quiet. Handling and ride are marginally improved over OEM Michelin. Fuel MPG is down about 10% on highway with Pilots. Snow and Wet traction are HUGE improvements over OEM.

Ed

You know, now that you mention it, I just completed a 260 mile roundtrip and I thought the indicated MPG from the trip computer seemed a tad on the low side considering I was driving on the highway.

I was out in the same stuff today. Using the PAX right now with no issues. They have 30K miles on them so, not as good in the snow as they were last year. But still, no handling issues. AWD is nice in the slush.

The snow was heavy, sticky and wet, as you know. Had two CMBS warnings, to and from Fair Oaks, saying the sensor was obscured! First time that has happened.

I guess they're popular in NoVA - I loved their performance today as well. Good tires. I wouldn't have any issues recommending them in terms of performance... only time will tell with regards to durability.

My CBMS warning also came on several times during the snow yesterday. I did clear the sensor, re-start the car and immediately turn off the CBMS switch.......the warning still managed to come back on a little while later! Must have been the very wet/slushy snow that really stuck to the front end of the car.

Drove home on my new Pilots today in the snow for the first time, and they held pretty decent! Was only about 2 inches so far. True test will be tomorrow morning, as MN is supposed to get another 6 inches tonite. I wish the lake would freeze over so I can have my own personal skid pad and really see what these can do!

I don't know if it was the new Pilots, or the VSA, or combo of both, but I could not be happier with a set of all season tires. My road had about 10 inches of fluffy snow on it, and I had no problem breaking trail through it to get to the plowed roads. I could either get on it and activate VSA or be gentle, and it pulled right through it. Felt like it was on rails when driving on the packed snow on the interstate. Mind you, the last time I drove on snow, I had the MXM's with 45k miles on them.....

Great to see the driver reviews! I noticed these at Costco the other day, 199/each. I won't replace until I wear out my MXM's, and I do lust for the Eagle F1 GS-D3's...but good to know our options.

Just put these on as well and they're so much better than the OE Michelins that came on the '06. Actually, I never realized how bad the original tires were until I had enough time driving in these things, especially in the rain, it's like night and day. Expensive, but worth it in my opinion.

Update: ok, one bad thing I've noticed is that my gas mileage has gone down. Not much (maybe 2 MPG), but it is noticeable. Maybe it will go back up after the tires are more broken in or something. But the tires are still very nice and worth the loss, at least to me.

I'm noticing reduced MPG, as well, going from my stock 17" wheels with OEM tires to the 18" A-Spec wheel with the Pilot Sport A/S Plus. I'm wondering how the 18" MXM H4 handles and rides when the time comes to get new tires. They got a pretty good write-up for grip in a recent Car and Driver article on winter tires.

I seem to remember 037 going from the stock 18" MXMs to the Pilot Sports on his 2009 RL. I'll have to search to see if he wrote a before/after comparison -- or hope he'll (re)post one here.

I'm totally happy with the transition to the 18" wheels on the A-Specs. The car definitely rides more firmly, and really hugs the road. I'm anxious to take a drive to Palm Desert on the back roads with the new rubber.
