Looking for sick rims!

Ok, so I was originally going to put the RL a-spec rims on my car, but after getting it tinted 15% and deciding to drop it with H&R springs - I need something a little more cool...

I've been looking online but haven't found what I'm looking for so I need everyone's advice:

I'm looking for the following criteria:

1) 18" or 19"
2) with a lip
3) 5 spoke (ideally looking for something that looks similar to a mercedes AMG rim)
4) not chrome

I really liked AmBiGuOuS626's rims - and am looking for something similar but not chrome and a little more affordable...

what do you guys reccomend??

thanks!

p.s. just got my first mods done:
a) 15% tint all around
b) Valentine 1 radar detector hard-wire install
c) USA Spec I-pod adapter install

next 2 mods: H&R drop & rims.

Will post pics as soon as I can...

Of course, only you can say what you like, and there are a lot of AMG style wheels out there, but I would first consider what kind of rubber you want to put on. You have a lot more choice, and I mean a lot, if you go with 18" wheels.

Just go to the Tire Rack for representative sample of 245/45-18 tires out there.

Now do the same for 245/40-19s and take a look at your choices. It is better than the stock size of 245/50-17, but not by much.

If you are worried about cost, 19 inch tires tend to be much more expensive for that extra inch, and something you ought to consider....

Now you can change the tire size for the 19's but you should keep very close to the OEM diameter.

19 inch tires tend to weigh more than 18 inch tires...

Since 19 inch wheels tend to weigh more also, you are fighting two weight budgets if you want to keep close to the OEM weight. But ideally, if you are going to the trouble to get new wheels and tires, you want to be better (weigh less) than the OEM weight.

Forged or MAT wheels are much lighter, but more expensive than low pressure cast wheels.

Everything is a compromise, and I just put these items forward as factors to consider in your choice.

Also remember to check with the manufacturer that the wheels will clear the front calipers of the RL and that your wheel should ideally be Acura/Honda TPMS compatible, which, if it is a new wheel, should be pretty easy these days.

Just some random thoughts. Let us know what you come up with on your quest for new wheels so we can chime in our thoughts.

RonJon makes a 5-spoke that's in the same style of the AMG dual-spoke 5-stars. Several makers produce knock-off AMG 5-stars that are of very high quality and appearance. You can find those at Tire Rack or Discount Tire.

I very nearly bought the 19" RonJons that DoctorTuna has for sale right now, since I prefer the look of those to the ubiquitous 5-stars. The 40-series sidewall is what scared us off... just not enough comfort level for me regarding ding/damage from road hazards in my area. The appearance, however, is outstanding with a 19!

I mis-spoke here. I now believe 19 and 18 inch tires in the same rolling diameter weigh about the same, that is 245/40-19 and 245/45-18s weigh about the same within the same brand model.

I forgot when I wrote this that my Yoko 255/40-19's are a little larger than the recommended size of 245/40-19, so therefore my slightly larger Yokos are indeed a little heavier than the recommended Michelins in 245/40 sizing.

If I look at something like Michelin Pilot Sport A/S which is one of the few in the same brand model that has all three correct sizing for the RL, 245/50-17, 245/45-18 and 245/40-19, they are all the same weight at 27lbs.

Yeah, I saw those Ron Jons too - there are actually 2 styles that I like, only prob is that I gotta have the lip (eliminates 1) and I really don't like the rivets in the other (just doesn't look 'clean' enough).

Chas - I agree that an 18" would def be a more affordable way to go and provide more selection when it comes to the tires, I just didn't want to exclude a 19" from consideration - although dings/damage are a definite concern.

Ballinger, I looked on Tire Rack and saw some of the AMG knock-offs, but they don't fit the RL...is there some place else that would have more sizes?

The bolt pattern is what limits things but I understand that many BMW wheels will fit with a hub ring, just ensure the offset is compatible. Many wheels on Ebay will show up under advanced search and click title/description and type in 5x120 Acura. I emailed a few sellers that responded that the wheels will clear the RL caliper.

I would only go with 19's on this car, 18's if you must but 19's look best.
The RonJons Legends are ok, they just tend to look like a stock wheel though much better than the OEM wheels. The Ace Strada is now my top choice depending on the weight (waiting for a response from some vendors) and the AME wheels are in 2nd.
I prefer lips myself.

Lips are nice. Did you look at the 5zigen SC3000?
https://acurazine.com/forums/2g-rl-photograph-gallery-91/jaysmith2000s-5zigen-acura-rl-499258/

Don't know if it fits but AME has a Tracer TM-02 now showing. The specs are not clear since they refer back to the FS-01 fitment page.

FYI, some notes I have gathered over time:

AME Tracer FS-01
Email from July 2008. We know from Touge that TPMS works with the AME Tracer FS-01

Thank you for your inquiry. According to AME that wheel will fit the Acura RL 06. Yes, the wheels are over bored and use Hub Centric Rings to center the wheels. The Hub Centric rings are sold separately. AME has a unique center bore. We have to have them custom made for each vehicle. The hub rings will be $60.00/set. We will provide chrome lug nuts. If you would like locking lugs, they will be additional. I will have to confirm the compatibility of the Acura TPMS. If you have any further questions or would like to order these parts please call us at 818.998.6005 M-F 10-6pm PST.

Thank you,

This info on the Strada may be wrong since we have pictures and testimony from Roy that they work. The only thing I can think of may be that the new run of wheels may have changed design over time. I think he probably just made a mistake, but it is worth checking since the email below is from a sales rep employed by Ace. This email info is from May 2008

Ace Strada
This wheel will not clear the caliper of your car. Neither is the Allure in 19"

The only wheel we have to clear the caliper on that car (06 RL) is the Deluxe in 19" and Executive in 20"

Executive is 31 lbs and Deluxe 19" is 27 lbs

Be careful here guys!! That is partially correct; don't get stuck with having to ship a VERY heavy set of wheels back because they did not fit!!!

I owned 2 BMW 7-series as well as a 5 and an M3, all with aftermarket wheels. They are correct in saying that the bolt pattern is 5x120 but the offset is very small by comparison - I ran 18x10 in the back and the offset was 19. The front ones were 12 in 18x8.5. Also, there is the hub size that is something that some folks overlook. You can go with rings, like I did with the Stradas, but only if the hub is bigger, and without rings the wheels could be off center. If it isn't the wheel will not fit (sit flat on the hub) properly regardless of offset.

Just some food for thought...
