Your speedometer will be off by 3%, which is not that little. If you don't care, get the 225 50 17.

The recommended size for the RL is 225 55 17.

Specification Sidewall Radius Diameter Circumference Revs/Mile Difference
245/50-17 ** 4.8in 13.3in 26.6in 83.7in 757 0.0%
225/50-17 ** 4.4in 12.9in 25.9in 81.2in 780 -3.0%

225/50-17 is too small a diameter. You want 225/55-17 to maintain the design tire diameter for this all wheel drive car. 3% off is more than you want.

My personal rule of thumb is to keep the difference between stock design diameter and newly fitted tires to less than 2% difference, and certainly, all four tires must be the same diameter.

245/50-17 is stock
225/55-17 is an alternate snow tire size that works, virtually same size.
235/55-17 is about 2% off (too big) but will work and is better than the originally posted
225/50-17 which is 3% off (too small).

Use this calculator to help in your decision making http://www.1010tires.com/tiresizecalculator.asp

Consider advice from other sources such as the Tire Rack or similar, your dealer (if you trust they are knowledgeable), your local tire shop, your local tuner shop, and this forum in making your decisions...
