X50 Hardwired pics?

Ok Im sure, if not almost possitive I read about some of you having your passport X50's hardwired in your RL's, but does anyone have any pics? I would realy like to get this done, and need to see what it looks like. I need to do it soon as well, because otherwise I will be getting a speeding ticket real soon, for some reason I cant stop speeding in my new RL, its just to smooth of a ride, I dont even notice.

I'd also like to see pictures of hardwired setups (e.g. where you tap into the wiring and which fust you plug into) as I'm interested in hardwiring my V1. Should be similar.

i do have an escort 8500 hardwired on to my RL. You have to get the hardwire kit from their website first before you can successfully get power from the car. I originally tried using phone cords with no success because that's how I hardwired the radar to my old TL. For some reason regular phone cords don't work with the RL.

Unfortunally I don't have any pictures, but I think one of the forum members had posted some, thats where I found them. Let me know if you have further questions.

Okay, here's the deal:

I wired mine to the 10A ACC socket at position #32 (circled in this pic):

I used a simple device called Add-A-Circuit, available at auto parts stores for about $6-9.00. It's an L-shaped thingy that you plug into the fuse socket, then plug the original fuse - as well as the fuse for the new circuit - into. It has a hot lead running off of it for your device (detector in our case). It lookes like this when installed:

Attach the hot lead from the Add-A-Circuit to the hot side of a cigarette lighter socket (get one at Walmart) and ground the other cigarette lighter lead to a screw or bolt under the dash. Plug your 8500 into this socket and you're ready to go. (I do this so I don't have to cut my 8500's OEM wiring.)

Now ... regular phone wire won't work with the 8500. Go to an electronics store like Fry's and get the kind used for computers (sorry, I don't recall what it's called). It has wire pairings that are the opposite of telephone wire, but otherwise looks identical. Use this wire to run to your mounted detector so you don't have to use the coiled wire.

Stuff the cigarette lighter socket, coiled wire, etc., up in behind the little tray at the base of the steering column under the dash and you're done.

Plastikman, I do this only because I love you.

I mounted mine on the far left side of the dashboard top on the driver's side. I like my detectors there, since they're easy to reach and are partially obscured by the inspection and license stickers. And, no, the stickers do NOT affect radar or laser acquisition. Velcro holds it fine, even though there's minimal flat surface area.

One last note on the "telephone-type" wire to extend to your detector .... watch your connectors - do NOT get the networking cable that has a bigger connector. It's just exactly like the telephone connector (RJ32?). The colored wires are just arranged differently. Buy it from Escort and they'll charge you a ton for it. Buy it at Fry's for about 6 bucks.

Thank you! Sounds so easy even a mere doc can do it.

Luckily, the V1 does use regular phone cord.

Mike, do you buy the actual cigarette lighter socket at Rat Shack, or just wiring marked for it (e.g. what part number do we use)? More pics of this would be instructive.

For the V1, I'd have to mount higher so I don't block the rear radar detector, but no biggie, I just ran the wire in the top of the headliner on my TL.

I forgot to move this to "Audio, Electronics...." last night but will now.

Bob, I bought a "one-into-two" cigarette lighter adapter at Walmart (one of those kind that turns one outlet into two, in a kind of "Y" configuration). Cost like 3 or 4 dollars as I recall. I cut one of the two socket ends off, then wired to it.

I did this as a lazy man's way to avoid cutting the coiled wire that comes with the Escort. And I wasn't willing to pay them the price they wanted for a straight cord. You can avoid this step if you don't mind cutting your OEM detector wiring hookup. The added benefit is that it is quick and easy to disconnect the whole enchilada if you want to ... just unplug the detector from the Walmart socket and go.

Now, I can't speak for the medical profession in general, but I have confidence you could handle this.

BTW - I failed to mention this, assuming it to be obvious, but the fuseblock I wired to is the one down on the driver's side kick panel next to the parking brake. Nice and conveniently located.

Just did this tonight, took a bit longer than thought. I mounted it near the rear view mirror. What makes it harder is snaking the phone cord by the A-pillar since I left it in place. Normally I would have removed it, but on this car there is a special one time use clip there that hold part of the pillar for the side-airbag, so if you remove the a-pillar you have to get a new clip from acura.

Mike,

Is the Position #32 ACC Socket being used for any other accessories or are you adding the load of the Radar Detactor to this circuit?

Ohhhhhh man, I feel . . . . . . LOVED !

All jokes aside, thanks for the pic. Do you guys leave your detectors in the cars when you arent in them? I heard a few TL owners talk about having their windows bashed in and their detectors stolen, so that would be something that would worry me

If I park in a shady area I will take mine out, otherwise I leave it in.

Socket #32 is for the accessory "cigarette lighter" outlet. It's protected by a 10amp fuse (which you leave in place with the Add-a-Circuit), and the detector is protected by a second 10amp fuse, so I don't think the extra load is a problem.

The detector, BTW, is a low-draw device, so it doesn't pose a threat. In any case, if the load gets too high (like maybe you try to run some high-amperage device from the cigarette lighter outlet), you should blow a fuse before anything negative happens.

Same here. I have mine mounted down low at the center of the windshield.

I was told that cops are trained to aim at the license plate when using LIDAR since the plate is so reflective. Since the cone of the LIDAR beam is so narrow, the closer you can mount (read: lower) to the plate the best chance (however remote) you have of getting some hope to to get a warning before the cop locks on. I also added one of those license plate shields that inhibits the reflectivness of the plate in hopes of increasing my chances. I know that the odds are extremely against you with LIDAR, but I figure anything could help. For RADAR it is best to mount high, but since the 8500 has such great range anyway, you're not really losing much.
