Using "not an ashtray" for Accessory Electronics Install?

Since the Canadian spec RLs did not offer satellite radio, I am considering getting one of the little portable rigs with built in FM modulator. A perfect stealth place to install one would be in the "not an ashtray", plus I was thinking the light in the compartment would mean 12V power is easy to get at there as well, but it looks like the felt liner bit would need to be gutted out to fit many of the sat units that I see are available...has anyone done this (for any type of aftermarket install in the not an ashtray) and how did it look afterwards?

There is room underneath the felt liner for a small modulator. Someone placed their Mediabridge there I believe. Then you could keep the stock look.

Search "Dice Mediabridge" in Electronics. I will look for a link later.

Actually the sat units I am looking at have a built-in modulator, so what I'd want to do is basically "gut" the felt liner portion which would allow enough space for the sat unit to fit inside the compartment while still allowing the lid cover to close over it for the stealth factor when parking the car. I'm just not sure if the felt liner itself is removeable or if it's like glued/bonded to the compartment housing or liner or whatever you call it...

It is removable. It either pulls straight out, or there are two screws. It has been documented before.
