Has anyone tried to install the acura rear view camera themself or had a dvd entertainment installed in the headrest on a 2005-2006 RL?

It is my understanding that it is a bad idea to try to install the backup camera in the 05 RL. Several have tried with installation by Acura factory trained folks, and the results have been a disaster. I myself have had an aftermarket Rosen DVD player installed in the dome of my RL and it works great. At the time, no dual headrest DVD players were available because my RL was so new. Now of course may be different. If I had it to do over and if dual headrest DVD player replacement headrests were available, I would do that instead of in my dome simply because it obstructs my rear window when deployed.

It may be possible to install the official Acura-brand camera with an aftermarket interface unit to tap into the navi screen, which I don't think anyone has tried yet.

Regarding a DVD player, wouldn't it be easier to just get a handheld DVD player? They cost less than $200 now and you can take it with you.

It would be easier to buy a portable DVD player but I like the clean install look. I've had a portable DVD for the kids and one issue was heat from the battery and device.

thanks,

Robert

I had planned on putting the rear view camera on my 05 rl. The dealer said it would work fine with my vehicle. They said the kit came with a cord long enough to plug directly into the back of the nav system. Installing it im not sure what all is involved but the said it would not be bad, they installed two so far and said they didnt have any trouble. As for the headrests they dont make a replacement style headrest for the new rl's but you could get just screens and place them in yourselves. However because of the split design of the rl or previous generation mercedies S Class you would need to get the thinest screens available so they dont pop out too bad..

Tell your dealer, "stop feeding crap". I have not heard of anyone what got the OEM cam working on 05 RL. Sure you can install the cam (it will fit very well), but when you pop in reverse it will not power on. Officially you have been worn.
