Ordered Motorola 815 just now

Turns out with company pricing and my current phone being more than 2 years old I can get the 815 for free. Should work well with the RL except the data link. Oh well. Apparently this is a hacker friendly phone that so that disabled BT profiles can be re-enabled. Got to love those kids with lots of time on their hands

Will report how well it works.

I saw the reviews on Cnet and they were just bubbling with positiveness. I thought for a moment about that LG candybar flip phone with qwerty keyboard but it's not certified by Acura so forget that. Plus 'net access is another $15 a month or so. Sweet gadget though.

If only I could use my (new) phone as a modem for my BT PocketPC. The guy at the store said 'iz no pozzibel' (actually his English was 100%, I'm just being stupid) but maybe I can make it work anyway.

Unless this thread relates to discussing phones that are compatible with the RL, please continue this discussion in the Cell Phones forum.

Thanks,
Michael

What the?

So Mr. Wan, why ask me if the phone thread relates to the RL (it does) and then close it anyway? That seems a bit heavy handed. The 815 -is- one of the few Verizon phones listed on the Acura site. If you had given me a few seconds to respond I could have said that. If you had read my other reply which said that the LG phone was not on the site then you could have deduced that the 815 was.

Bah.

The thread was about the compatability with the RL. Perhaps merge the threads and re-open if you feel it is appropriate.

I forgot to add that I acknowledge that I understand that the moderators can pretty much do whatever they please, including asking questions without providing a means to reply.

I have to agree-this is a pretty disciplined bunch (certainly compared to some other forums I frequent), and I have not seen much in the way of "runaway" threads since I joined. Michael, please don't shut down useful dialogue unless it is obviously (and gratuitously) off-topic, which IMHO the previous thread was not. The free flow of info and ideas is one of the main reasons I come to this Acura site and not the many others that exist.

Folks,
I apologize for being a bit "heavy handed" in terms of locking threads and I'll be more careful in the future.

In the past, I tended to lock any phone thread that didn't go along the lines of "which cell phones are compatible with the RL."

Originally in the first post, I was given the impression that this thread was one of those "I just bought a new cell phone" type post, but didn't see the big picture.

Sorry about that,
Michael

NP Michael. The 815 works great with the RL. Battery strength seems to work fine even though Acura says it shouldn't. The one disappointment I have with HFL is that it doesn't work with the phonebook in the phone. Not sure if that's a BT limitation (doubt it) or HFL. Now I need yet another place to keep my little black book up to date

recommendations anyone?

I just got my RL last week and looking to get a new bluetooth phone to for hand free feature in the car, replacing my sprint phone. so just wondering any recommendations out there. I really would like a free or low cost one since i dont believe in paying too much for a phone thats get replaced so often, anymore. I am thinking of motorola razor, anyone have any problems using bluetooth on the RL? Any other recommendations? Thanks in advance.

If you want your phone to work in the SF Bay Area (and elsewhere) Verizon is really the only choice. Personal and anecdotal evidence from friends/collegues re-affirms this time and again. I've put up with non-sezzy phones for a while now but the calls keep coming in and hardly ever drop. I think you can get the 815 for $50 with a 2 year contract and mail in rebate. They may have cheaper phones too but those may not have BT.

Anyone dug deeper into getting HFL phonebook to work, like by hacking the phone's BT features? If the Acura phonebook is only 50 long, it won't help me anyway. Anyone who has it, can I just hit the RL's "talk" button and have it access the Moto's voice recognition feature (like hitting the button on a BT headset would do)?

I don't think anybody has tried and I doubt anybody will try. It would be virtually impossible for one of us to reprogram the HFL device. But maybe there is somebody who is willing to try - doubtful though.

It would be nice (and easy from a technical perspective) to just pipe the HFL into the phone and have it do speech recognition. After all with the 815 you can do all these voice things already. I was excited about HFL but getting less so now that I'm finding out the 'small print'. HFL would be great for a really dumb phone but once you stick BT in a phone it'll have all the bells/wistles already.

At least it's easy to pick up the phone. Shouldn't really be making calls anyway.

Just tried an LG VX8100 at a Verizon store. Works fine. I'm contemplating a switch. The 815 is OK but the address book only allows limited number of digits per entry. The 8100 misses some nice things my old VX has but I guess that's what happens. Add some crud features like VCAST and remove some good ones like usable security. Sigh.

Have you considered the new BT samsung?

Yes I did but the concensus seems to be that the VX is better. They have the same interface though so that makes it easier to choose.

Nocturnal - the 815 has worked quite well for me; it may have missed a whistle. I am serviced through Verizon. In a while Acura may get hooked up like the iPod deal

This is a good forum on the v710 and also has a section on the 815.

815 Features Question

I got my RL on Monday and went out yesterday and bought a Motorola 815 for my Verizon plan. I "paired" the phone and after doing so had success voice sending calls from car using the phone's phonebook.

Today, as I attempt to place a call, it seems as if the car does not recognize any of the numbers stored in my phone. Does anyone have an idea as to why that is happening?

Also, I do not recall seeing any information showing up in the Multi-Information Display. Is there something I have to do to enable this function?

Thanks for any help. I'm usually capable of figuring these types of things out, but the owners manual for both the RL and th phone are somewhat brief.

The HFL contacts and your phone's contacts are not linked and can't be linked. You have to setup the phone numbers in the HFL.

Yep, this is one of the biggest disappointments with HFL. In truth the exchange of address book info is not a common BT feature. Verizon disables OBEX by default (can be hacked) but I'm not sure even that is generic enough to allow integration with HFL. HFL really only is a deluxe headset except that you can't use it to talk to the phone directly and use its voice recognition phone book. That is something that works fine with regular BT headsets.

So far I've found that dialing the number directly from the phone (using voice recognition and speaker phone) and then transfering to the HFL works best. Receiving calls works fine as well although you will have to recognize the number yourself on the MID screen.

E815

I have a v710 and the cell phone book does not show up in the car. I just bought an E825 for my audi and the phone book shows right up - no problem. Verizon told me the the v710 disabled the OBEX but the the E815 does have OBEX enabled. So, if I get an E815 for my RL will the cell phone book show up in the car?

No - You cannot transfer the phonebook to the BT in the car like the Audi. The HFL in the Acura cars does not support this feature - it doesn't matter what phone it is.

The HFL has its own phonebook which you can program and can hold 50 entries

Verizon does not have OBEX enabled for any of its BT phones. However it's apparently no big deal to enable this. You'll need a USB cable. If anyone is interested in that cable (plus software) let me know. I got the cable and returned the phone so I'm looking to unload it

I have to caution you though. It seems that Acura HFL does not support phone book download regardless of OBEX. Sounds like the Audi system is better, at least in that regard. Sigh.

The OBEX is not enabled on the E815 unless its been hacked.

1. E815 doesn't have OBEX enabled. You have to "hack" it to enable OBEX.

2. Phonebook would not transfer regardless of OBEX - Acura Handsfree doesn't support it.

Thanks!

Apparently the v710 is tri-mode and has BT but it has to be special ordered. I'll probably do that. I need analog and BT in the same phone. No word yet when that Nokia flipphone is coming.

You can buy my v710 that's sitting here doing nothing

My only complaint about the v710 is the keypad sucks. I hate it - it feels funny - especially after using the e815's new keypad. Otherwise, you will love the reception - it is top notch.
