Talking A Nav tip

I'm sure this is documented somewhere in the manual, but I don't recall seeing it (that manual is fairly substantial in size, after all).

If you're going somewhere on a route calculated by the Nav, you can press the Map/Guide button at any time and see when the next turn is coming up ... along with the graphic showing the turn. I found this out by accidentally pressing the button while trying to access one of the other menus.

Thing is, the Nav often warns you of an upcoming freeway exit or turn or whatever only when you're a half-mile from it. And that sometimes doesn't give you enough time to thread through traffic and get into the correct lane. So you can just press that button and see when the exit or turn is coing up BEFORE the Nav gets around to telling you.

When I was in the L.A. area recently this came in really handy, since some freeway exits are left and some are right, and traffic is insane. Even on the open road, it's sometimes good to know the next turn and the name of the street or highway miles before it comes up.

I have my Nav set up in split screen mode. Map on the left and upcoming turns on the right.

You have better eyes than I do... I need all the screen real estate I can get!

Seriously, this is a helpful feature. Under certain circumstances - nightime driving in the hills east of the San Francisco area being one example - it was REALLY helpful to be able to "sneak a look" ahead and know I had a turn coming up in 5 miles or a fork in the road in 3 miles, or whatever. And it's better than the whole turn list thingy, which is too much to swallow at a glance.

Me likey.

That's why the button says "Map/Guide" Defaults to MAP, but press it again and you get guidance.

Guidance not 100% correct

My brand new 2006 RL is awesome and I already depend on the NavTraffic here in L.A. The guidance from the nav unit is not always right though.

Example: Northbound on the 710 freeway in the left lane, the split-screen guide on the nav shows the arrow continuing up the 710 while the voice guide says: "Stay on 91 West" (which is the right-hand exit). Weird. Good thing I know my route!

Not sure how to find out my DVD version (search terms incorrect?). Build date of the car is 7/06. Has anyone noticed whether later versions have this quirk?

Cannot help you with the 710 directions since the last time I lived in LA, it was called the 7, and the Harbor Freeway was called the 11.

However, you can pop out the DVD in the trunk and see the version number.

My car was manufactured 7/06 also, and is equipped with v 3.41C

You have to turn the car on so that there is power to the navi unit. Open the trunk, and you will see the DVD unit attached to the bottom of the rear package shelf on the driver's side. Eject the DVD and look at it for version number. The newest version is 4.55, which surprisingly has an update for Lynchburg, VA, which I actually travel to on occassion, but not so much that I would want to spend $200 on a new disc.

See the link for updates. You get to it from acura.com, click on Acura store, and look for the navi update site. It actually takes you an alpine site, since I think they manufacture the navi system.
