Talking Nav system modding - burning question

I have always had this burning question in mind. Instead of installing devices such as navtool n tvandnav2go to add a video input to nav screen, is there no way to mod the or replace the optical drive of the head unit so it can read dvd video disc as well ? There's gotta be a way to integrate the core part of the stand alone dvd player, the laser reader, into the RL's Nav system CD/DVD reader. Any one crazy enough to try this ?

I'm not near familiar enough, but the video source all seems to come from the nav unit, which also seems to handle the voice control so there would be no way to get the video from the in dash drive to the monitor. That's why the navtool is installed in the trunk. It's a very complicated system and I would like to know how all the computers and systems communicate as this would help to diagnose problems down the road. Because there's no way we can take it to the dealer to fix the electronics. They would charge a fortune and likely not fix it right. I think the nav handles the voice control because voice commands do not work unless nav is booted and OK is clicked.

I think it wouldn't work or least easily. There must be lot of processing going on on the navtool not just wire tapping and signal input in order for it to work flawlessly along side the nav system. I have no idea how the unit is built n configured but the only thing that comes to my mind is to have both systems. Navtool installed to receive video signal input and, if possible, a compatible optical drive integrated into the Nav Head unit whereby it's video signal would be routed to the navtool n the audio signal just as the factory configuration is now. All this sounds good in writting but dont know if its worthed all the trouble and if possible in first place.

I highly doubly the NavTool is anything more than a glorified switch.

Its a pass through until it receives 12 volts then it interrupts the signal and displays what ever input it receives.

Nothing technical about it.

It's activated by button presses on the head unit so it does interface a bit. And it has 2 inputs I think and a reverse circuit you can hook up so you can have a reverse camera. Expensive, but they don't sell a ton of 'em so it's going to be.

Only for the second channel because it interrupts the XM signal.

Even then it passes through until you plug in a new source and it sees a signal

You guys are somewhat correct..it is a video switcher but it also takes the regular video and converts it to a RGB that the factory screen can use.
I have the PAC video unit with a custom cable that hooks to the back of the screen instead of the nav unit on my 03 CLS. It works just as well in front.
The way its made it should work on almost any Acura nav screen.
