Thumbs up iPhone 3GS and MusicLink

I got an iPhone a few weeks back and just got around to trying it with the MusicLink in the RL.

First the bad news, it won't charge the phone.

Now the good news. Although the iPod controls are locked the voice commands on the iPhone still work. So this allows you to select artists, playlists or albums via voice commands on the iPhone directly. The voice commands included with the MusicLink software were horrid. This also means you don't need to install any software on your iPhone or via iTunes. For driving this is just fine with me because I wouldn't want to be looking through menus anyway.

When you press the voice command button on the iPhone it will lower the volume on the iPod and you just say "Play Artist Styx". Once the music starts you can skip forward and back via the steering wheel or radio controls.

The random artists and albums also seems to work without the MusicLink software on your iPhone.

It would be great if it still charged your phone but the iPod function doesn't seem to use that much battery. Just make sure you don't put your phone in airline mode when you get the warning message when the iPhone is plugged in.

I have an 05 RL with the original MusicLink module.
