I-006: DIY Autotoys.com Nav to Video Interface (with BOTH Audio and Video)
Group buy interest...
Yeah nobody really replied to that group buy message I posted but if you want the unit I highly recommend it. The instructions suck but it's well worth the hassle. I'm not done finishing my trunk so I havent put additional pics up but I jailbroke my iPhone 3GS and bought the slingplayer app to connect to my slingbox over 3G. With this app TVOutMirror in the cydia app store. I get all the channels in my RL! Surprisingly very watchable while the car is in motion as well. I know it's not safe but just in case anyone was wondering
Just made the purchase - Total was $234.50 with an iPod/iPhone video cable...
I went for the "Wiring at XM tuner in trunk" because they listed the other as for 07+ TL (I have a 2005 TL). It is also listed as Version 3... Fingers crossed it will be simple.
I've been curious as to how good the TVOutMirror would be, I think that adding that application makes it a killer install as you get the iPhone interface on the nav screen.
Also, I was wondering about the 'Hand Brake Ground' wire. The wire that you connect so the system thinks you are not moving to display video. What if you connected this to a switch. Could you then use a switch to change from Video back to NAV without having to use the remote? You would have to use the remote to start the Video, but then it would seem that you could switch back and forth quickly.
The order would be the unit's ground to the switch and then a wire from the switch to the the car's ground.
Hard to test not having one... but I think that would be awesome if that would work!

If you try this, let us know if it works. When I have time, I’ll give it a test run by disconnecting the ground and reconnecting it to see how the interface responds. It sounds like it should work, but not completely sure.
One thing that I’ve done to make going back and forth easier is I’ve Velcro-ed the remote to the outside of the armrest with it facing the sensor on the left side of the center dash. It took a little getting used to at first, but when I want to change between video and no video; I just press the button on the remote while it is still Velcro-ed in place. My leg is sometimes in the line of sight from the remote to the IR sensor, so when this happens I just move my leg to the left slightly and press the button again. I’ve done it enough now where I’ve memorized the placement of the correct buttons on the remote so it’s pretty quick for me to go back and forth.

As for the ground wire idea, I think it will work but you ordered the same unit as me (Version 3). Im not 100% sure that your install will be like mine but do not wire any of the loose wires on the video harness or you will burnout the unit! You cannot use Jhal's instructions. The version of the unit we have is not the same. The unit gets power, ground, and remote from the audio/video harnesses. Well...that was the case on my 2005 Acura RL. You will have to cut the ground wire from the harness, extend the wire, and add the switch you want to it.
AutoToys BS - I think that was my first and only order... but I should received it Monday.
I will have to see how the wires are in the harness to pull out the ebrake wire to ground it or try the switch idea that I proposed earlier.
Hi this is my first time posting something on here but I've been reading this tread for a while now and I just decided to go along with this. This is my first time doing anything like this and I just received my autotoys nav to video interface and I was able to connect both the video and audio harnesses in the trunk. But this may be a stupid question but how do i connect the wire to ground? I see that i already has a connection splice butt crimped on it. Do I get another wire to connect it to ground, if so what size? How did you do it.
I received mine on Monday and it was all plug and play, I didn't have to connect any extra wires (except for the audio/video cable for iPhone).
Not sure if it matters, but I have a 05 TL 6spd. I don't have to have the parking brake on for the video to work. I am cautious about de-pinning the e-brake ground out of the harness to see if switches to the nav and back to the video or if it just makes the screen go blank.
I showed a guy at work and he couldn't believe that I was showing my iPhone home screen on my car NAV. I have yet to try out FaceTime to see how it works.

Never mind. I think it works without the ground but I wanted to make sure it doesn't affect the unit. I just took a extra 22 gauge wire and connected it to that crimped part and I attached it to a screw. Connected the a/v composite wires and it worked. I just have to run the wires to the front. Any suggestions or tips? or did everyone do it Jhal's way?
For those with TLs it sounds like both the audio and video connections can be plugged in the trunk (unlike when I did it on my RL). I'm not sure if you have an RL or a TL, but if you have a TL you should be able to plug and play both connections in the trunk. For the RL, I am unsure of the revised interface connectors, so I'll pose this to the community.
For those of you that own a RL and have purchased the newest version of the interface from autotoys, were you able to make both the audio and video connections in the trunk? Or did you need to run the audio connection to the headunit as I did with the original interface version?
Yes you can watch youTube from your iphone and it will play through the car's system.
hey guys i am not sure what years your RL's are. but my Car is a 06 RL and i was ready to buy this but noticed the product said RL 2004-2005... wondering if any of you put this on a 06 RL. or will this product work on my car.
lemme know.. thanks
lemme know.. thanks
I have mine installed in a 2005 RL. I know they have slightly changed the interface since I bought and installed mine, but it should still work in a 2006 RL.
i think its still the same radio... slightly different i suppose. but i emailed Autotoys and they said "they haven't tested it on a 06 RL", now am a lil hesitant. but i strongly believe it would work.
anyone else on here have a different opinion?

Hi Chi Town, did you ever get this installed? I live in chicago too, personally all I need is an aux input (headphone jack) so I can plug in my phone to listen to music but if you have had success, I would like to know. I have a 2006 RL as well.
Jhal, you had a link earlier in the post that referred to removal of dash, head unit and so on. It looks like it's for subscribers only. Anyone has pictures or video on how to remove the trim so I can access the HU to install a unit similar to Blitzsafe or one of the aux HON units? I am afraid I'll break something while trying to remove.
Thanks.

jhal, first off, great write up!
I am mostly interested in how you pulled the trim up from your doors to run the wires. I did this on my '95 Legend and had trouble keeping the clips in good condition.
I would also like to pull the trim off of the column next to the steering wheel in order to run my radar detector to the fuse box. Did you have previous knowledge of where all the interior clips are located, or did you just have to guess? What tools did you use?
When I pulled the trim from my doors and windshield column (don't know what to call it) on my legend I broke a few clips and cracked the column trim. I bought a 2007 RL on Saturday and would love to wire the car to my liking, but I am WAY more paranoid about damaging the trim than I was when I was 18 and had a ten year old Legend.
Anyone's suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated!

Can anyone confirm what is the latest product to purchase for this?
I'm looking to make the upgrades but need to confirm the laundry list to buy. It seems Autotoys has upgraded their components.
Should I go with Autotoys or Ventura Technology directly?
I'm looking to have the simplest setup (least about of cable rework) as possible.
I have an iphone that I'm trying to hook up and dock in the front arm-rest. But would like to have steering wheel controls working the iphone (if possible). As well as video playback through the iphone and camera backup accessibility.
Thanks for your help guys!

I have an acura tl-s 08 and im interested in buying this harness but i have a couple of questions. That video to nav kit says that you can use the apple composite av cable how can u connect that if the unit goes in the trunk. Also does the harness comes with a 30 pin connector for the ipod and how long is the cable. Last but not least i wanna get this harness but i want to be able to have the text of the songs show in my navi system and at the clock display as well and they do say that i need to purchase the isimple kit but how can i connect the isimple when the Y harness goes connected to the back of the navi system if anyone pls answer these questions before i decide to get this kit pls

I'm also curious since there is no more splicing or wiring needed if you can still watch video while in motion? or if I had to ground that particular wire.
The USB connection on it is only for charging I believe. Even with the iphone you have to plug in the usb to charge AND the AV connections. I found a solution for the apple cable, found a 6ft long usb charging and av cable for the ipod
In other words, I can't use my non-iphone phone to play video through this setup, right?
No not through usb, now if the non iphone phone (that sounded funny) has an AV out cable you could plug it into the AV inputs on the device. But unfortunately my droid doesnt have that. I found a nifty little car DVD player that has an aux input, sd slot, and usb slot that i'm going to use with this.
The girlfriend just bought me the same setup for my birthday, came in yesterday. Hooking up everything took literally <5 minutes. They seem to updated their system or something but I didn't need to hook up the audio wire. Just plug the "black" plug into the back of the dvd navi box, plug in the 12volt red wire and ground the black. Voila done. I didn't need to dissemble my center console or anything. Was a bit relieved after seeing all the posts on here.
Sorry, this was for TL. >.<

Just so I don't somehow mess-up and buy the wrong one. Are you going to install a backup camera as well? How about a DVD player? Did you run the long iPod cord from the trunk?
@gurajit sorry for the late reply

this was the unit I got ^
It came with the 13ft white harness which I routed from behind my radio to the device. Black harness connected to nav DVD in the rear. The video was turning black and white after 3-4 minutes however and I found out the unit was getting a bit warm/hot. I ended up grounding the unit (black wire) which seemed to help. It's been a couple of days and no issue.
My car does have a backup camera already. I havn't been able to use the manual backup camera in the unit, just shows swiggly lines as if theres no input. Not a huge importance, was going to mess around with it when I can.
Hope that helps!

At the time I wrote that, my Droid 1 didnt have HDMI-out. Now my Droid X does and you could get an HDMi to composite video adapter.
