Fog light wiring?
Fog light wiring?
anyone out there know how to wire the foglights to run independently with the DRL? thought that would be a cool look without having to turn on the headlights or even without the DRLs on.
Also, anyone install HID kit into the foglights? any issues at all? was thinking of putting in a 3000k (yellow) kit on but didnt want to break a foglight lens. thanks

BTW - fog lights without headlights is illegal in the USA. Unfortunately it's a dumb law because in fog the fog lights stay under the fog to light the road and in the USA you have to light up the fog with the headlights. I have no evidence to substatiate that the "rules of the road" were written by anybody that can drive.
HID in the fogs is a good idea at 3000K but the lens and reflector only serve to light up the adjacent lanes, they do very little on top of your low beams.

thanks Blazing!
when i had my 98 maxima,it was simple. i think it was a matter of tapping a wire from the fuse wire for the foglight to the fuse wire of the corner lights. this was the fuse box under the hood. but that was many years ago off the maxima forums.

If you aren't concerned with being able to turn the fogs off with the lights on, you could just connect the relay inductor from the parking lights to the fog light relay inductor. However, if you want to be able to turn them off, there will need to be a simple circuit which includes the signal from the low beams and parking lights. I haven't figured it out yet, but have been thinking about it. I will update if I come up with something.
Where does it say that fogs are illegal without headlights? I see cars all the time with them. Mustangs and SUVs especially. All states have different laws too. I highly doubt ALL of the USA has that same law, but I surely could be wrong.

Never mind, I spoke too soon.
TEX TRANSPORTATION CODE ANN. § 547.328 : Texas Statutes - Section 547.328: FOG LAMPS PERMITTED
(a) A motor vehicle may be equipped with not more than two fog lamps.
(b) A fog lamp shall be:
(1) mounted on the front of the vehicle at a height from 12 to 30 inches; and
(2) aimed so that no part of the high-intensity portion of the beam from a lamp mounted to the left of center on a vehicle projects a beam of light at a distance of 25 feet that is higher than four inches below the level of the center of the lamp.
(c) Lighted fog lamps may be used with lower headlamp beams as specified by Section 547.333.
Supposedly driving with just parking lights is illegal too.

I found an easier way from looking at the wiring diagram. I don't have it handy, but there is a wire coming from the bottom of the fog light relay that goes into the control block. All the control block is doing to turn the fogs on is grounding this wire. So, if you put a switch to ground on this wire, your lights should come on whenever you flip the switch. This will be regardless of parking lights, DRLs, or anything.

Also, I'm not sure what the control block will think if this wire gets disconnected or gets grounded when it thinks it's not. Probably nothing, but you never know. Good luck! Do give us an update when you can.
The wire I'm looking at is in figure 46 and connects f2 and h4. I think it is light blue if I am reading this diagram correctly.
The white wire to e7 is from fig 45 and is always hot. When f2 is grounded the current through that inductor creates the magnetic field that pulls the light switch closed. At least that what I'm seeing. I would start with the car off and ground the wire. It should turn the fog lights on. If not, I wouldn't go any further.

I imagine that adding this switch in parallel with the control block would achieve the result poppintec has. That way either your switch or the control block is grounding. Good to know that someone has made it work.
Same here. I am interested to see what you've come up with because I want mine to be automated, i.e. no manual switch, and I don't want to lose any of the fog light switch functionality. I have a design for such a system; I just need to procure the parts and test it out.
I tried to tackle this through the switch depinning the connector but I want to keep foglights on while high beams are activated. I believe a 09-upgood accord has a manual foglight switch that would fit next to the mirror controls
hey carbon thats what i was going to use, when i installed my fogs on my tl i didnt use the wiring harness. so i was planning on using it here, it fits perfectly. and since the harness is h11 works perfect to our fog lights. only thing is the switch on your headlights switch will be a dummy.(wont work, no use). or i did this other thing on my tl were i tapped in the relay and ran it through the switch to use them as drls on the tl as well as fogs. worked great but dont want to mess the rls unit. so im debating now..
yea good luck getting to that relay under the hood. the wiring is a nice tight hot mess. Ive been through way too much wiring in the car and i can tell you acura made this car not to be messed with.
the switch uses a 5v signal, But from the switch to the relay it gets boosted to 12v somewhere along the lines. but still does not override the foglights with high beams.
I really like this feature i do alot of country driving ive already hit 2 deers since i have lived in the country so it would be nice to have all the light that i can get out of the RL

One thing I love about the RL HIDs is the cutoff. When I pass a deer, their head goes up, and I can see their entire body. However, their head is almost always above the cut off. This means that they can see you and judge whether you are coming at them or going by them. Don't get me wrong their judgment sucks no matter what, but your best bet of them staying in the ditch is to NOT blind them. You will do much less damage by not blinding them than you will by seeing them first. Once they are running, you can be completely stopped, and they will still hit your car.
Believe me or not, but I grew up on these roads:

I've hit at least 4 deer while I was driving, and have passed hundreds.
With the two deer you hit, were your high beams ever on?
Yeah. There definitely is an extreme amount of uncertainty about what they will do. They are very stupid animals. I passed a coyote the other day. It looked up at me and darted straight for the fence away from the road. MUCH more intelligent than deer. Probably why the coyote is higher up the food chain.
I grew up around the sticks in Maryland. And we have so many deer its legal to hunt them all over the state. I used to hit deer all the time when I never rode with the high beams on and they used to hit me too. Now I just ride with highbeams on and they just freeze and dont run out anymore. Havent hit a deer in about 8 years (knock on wood). It can really go either way probably.
fog lights alone..
i would say do not take the chance Messing with the RL electrical system. everything is tied together with other systems. but if you have too have a shop with exper. put a switch in. if i was you i would just drive the RL it is a great car!
