Cleveland NavTraffic - Question for Neuronbob and others
Cleveland NavTraffic - Question for Neuronbob and others
Hello All,
What type of information do you receive on your GPS for the NavTraffic in the Cleveland area?
Do you get incidents/traffic accidents, road construction, etc.?
I know that Cleveland does not have the speed sensors in the road, etc. so we will not get flow, etc., but on my system, I am receiving absolutely nothing?
I have confirmed my NavTraffic subscription as active with XM, etc., but still I get nothing on the GPS screen.
Thanks for the help. I appreciate it.

And if that scale does not show up, it can mean exactly that the traffic icon info has been turned off as dwboston says above...which found out I did after I cursed a bloody blue streak to XM. Oops

Hi Everyone,
So, I did make sure that the traffic icons were enabled and that my zoom was not too far out, but still nothing for the Cleveland area.
I know that the XM subscription/NavTraffic is active because I just acitivated it two weeks ago and I do show the traffic indicator on the screen.
I am wondering if anyone in the Cleveland area is getting any information at all?

Time to call XM again. They seem to have the power to send a "refresh" signal through the sat to trigger things. You have to have the nav system powered up and receiving the sat signal for about 15-30 minutes for it to re sync. Maybe your car was in the garage when you turned on the traffic service.

You never actually indicated what year or car you have. We're all assuming it's an 05-07 RL since you're in the second gen RL forum. Is this a safe assumption? If that's true, sounds like its time for a trip to the dealer. There is some software/hardware that is lnking the XM with the nav system. Nav is working, XM is working, but maybe something is broken with the comm between the two
You are right...I forgot to say that it is an 07 RL. Just picked it up a few weeks ago.
Yeah, I think it is time to go back to the dealer.
I was hoping Neuronbob would answer back as to what traffic information, if any, he receives on his screen, since he lives in the Cleveland area as do I.

I had a data "outage" once for a few hours (maybe a day) but it never lasted that long. I doubt Cleveland is "blacked out" right now.
Also, try scrolling to another nearby city (Toledo, Columbus, etc.) I found the traffic incidents showed up for a large area around your current location (not just the city you are registered in)
I believe Bob does because I found a previous post from him about a month ago where he talked about just being able to get the incident information and not speed/flow...I could be wrong....
I just went back out to the parking lot and scrolled around the map and found traffic info for Pittsburgh and Detroit, but nothing for Columbus or Cleveland (luckily I can get a wireless internet signal for my laptop while I sit in my car, as I typed this).
Were you seeing just incidents or was there road construction info or anything else around the Columbus area?
I guess I am trying to get a better idea as to what I should see on the map.

When you hover the little cursor on the screen over an incident icon, press the knob in and it will give you the detail. Again, make sure you are zoomed in correctly on the map and that the traffic icons are enabled.
SpicyMikey,
Were you able to see any road construction data/incident data around Columbus when you were scrolling around?
Dwboston,
I tried scrolling around your area and did not get anything, but I get plenty of info for Detroit and Pittsburgh.

I'm not surprised you can't see Boston data. I tried to check NYC roads before I boarded a flight into the area. It didn't work. It's probably just too far from your current location. For bandwidth reasons, they probably don't download data from the entire country to everyone's receiver. It's probably based on your current lat and long.
However, that's good news that you can see data for Pittsburgh and Detroit. It must mean there's nothing wrong with your car, or the link with XM. I guess it means Cleveland is"offline" for some reason. I'd think NavTraffic should be able to answer that question for you. Don't call Acura, they won't know. You might want to call NavTraffic back and push to talk to someone past the tier 1 support people.
That is a good idea to get past XM's initial Tier 1 support and try to get to someone higher up on the chain.
I will try it out and see what happens.
Also, on my way home today, I will scroll around the map and see if there is a radius to the information that they transmit based on your current lat/long.
I work in the Cleveland area, but live 50 miles south of that.
One other question Spicy...
Before you had let you trial run out, what types of info did you see for your area (knowing that you didn't have speed/flow)? road construct., accidents, etc.?

You're not too far from Cleveland(if that's what you're worried about). There is a limit to how for out the data will go, but 50 miles definitely ain't it. I remember I could see data in Miami from Orlando. That's 225 miles. I could also see the flow data in Tampa (60 miles) so I know that worked too. I just didn't have it in Orlando. Frustrating thing is the flow data for Orlando (and Cleveland) is on Traffic.com. NavTeq owns NavTraffic and Traffic.com, so go figure
Regarding your question; I only saw two different type of icons on the screen. One was an yellow triangle with an exclamation point. That was for "Incident" data. That could include accidents or any sort of slowdown. The other was a Yellow symbol with a men-working icon.
The problem I had was that the incident icons, and the text describing it, didn't really tell you what type of traffic impact it was causing. So, you now knew there was an accident ahead. But how many lanes is it blocking? Is it off to the shoulder already? Has it just been cleared? What's the IMPACT to traffic?? In the 3 months I tried it, I found it to be useless information without the flow data.

From my ride home and some very basic scrolling on the map, it appears that it gives you traffic information within about a 150 mile radius of your current lat/long.
When I started home from the Cleveland Area, I had information for the Pitts. and Det. area. When I got home, the Pitts. info was still there, but the Det. info was gone and when I scrolled around the area of Det., it was around 150 to 160 miles away.
I noticed even on the information given around Pitts. and Det. it is not the most descriptive as you indicated. It will just say traffic accident, or slow down, etc.
Even though Cleve. does not have speed/flow, it would be nice to even see some road construction data (it seems like every highway is tore up around here).
I know that traffic.com is the source for all the RTTI from XM to Sirius, Magellan, OnStar, etc.
I wonder if they are maybe having a formatting problem with the data or something? Who knows. I will call them later this evening and begin the process to try and sort out what is going on.
Thanks for the help.

Steelpride, I am SO sorry I missed this thread.
How can I miss another Clevelander on this board? (Or a visitor to our fair town?) I was too depressed about the Browns' loss to pay attention.
My service is indeed turned on and I get construction and traffic items.
In Cleveland, we don't have the road sensors everywhere yet, so those are not activated in the XM system.
HTH a little!

Hey Bob!
Nothing to be sorry about! I am glad that you wrote back. Thanks for the info. I really appreciate it. I sent you a PM also.
Nope, I am not a visitor. I work in Richfield and live in Massillon, but grew up in North Canton! I am a fellow North Eastern 'Ohioan'.
The drive is a long commute everyday, but the car helps alot!
That game Cleveland/Pitt game was so depressing yesterday, I turned it off at halftime.
Oh well, I am going to get on the phone here and call XM shortly and talk to them about what could be happening.
I may even call Park Acura in Akron (where I got the RL) and see what they have to say about it also.
Also, I know that the XM faq says that the incident data is only available on M-F from 5am-to-7pm, but do you still get construction information outside of those times and/or on weekends?
Thanks again for the help, I love the RL and now have to get this NavTraffic working!

I do receive the construction updates and even (occasionally) some accidents outside of those hours. I was just running an errand an hour ago in the RL and noted a big pileup on the opposite side of 271 from me. No accident was listed in that region, but the other long-term construction projects were, as well as accidents in other parts of the area.
If you're not receiving that information after an XM refresh, your XM reciever is busted and you need to visit the dealer.

I talked with XM last evening, and they tried another refresh and alot of talking, but...no luck.
So, as I was driving into work this morning, I thought of one other thing to try before I go back to the dealer.
When I get home this evening, I am going to pull the negative terminal on the battery and do a "complete car reset" and see if that will solve the problem.
I would do it here at work, but of course we do not have any tools here.

There is a TSB concerning XM Traffic and the "auto-start" feature of our starter. Don't get excited, it's not a real auto-start, it just keeps the starter granking until the engine is started.
Anyway, pulling the fuse has worked for me. I had the same issue and they replaced my XM unit, batery and then finally the TSB. I would assume it's easier for you to pull a fuse than pull the negative terminal...
If you can't find a copy of the TSB, PM me and I'll scan it then post it.
bob...
Thanks for the information. I found the TSB and made a printout.
It is always easier to pull a fuse than to reset the entire car with the battery!
I will do it when I get home tonight and let you guys know how it goes!
Thanks.

Good News!
It seems that doing a reset of the navigation system by pulling the fuse fixed the problem.
As I was driving into work this morning, I was receiving traffic info around Cleveland.
Let's hope this NavTraffic keeps working!

Great news! I'm glad it worked out for you instead of having to go to the dealer.

FYI regarding non-local traffic info:
If I recall correctly, XM doesn't use satellites for the transmission of traffic info and instead relies on it's terrestrial transmitters. As such I imagine that 1) You will only receive traffic in an area that has the back up terrestrial transmitters (i.e. metropolitan areas) and 2) the info provided would only be relevant to areas near the transmitter location.
So I don't think you will find an exact radius for how far you can see traffic info, but it instead is based on what XM considers to be nearby.
