Search for this topic. I think Tampa wrote up a very comprehensive description on how the system works and how a working link is very dependent on service provider, phone capabilities and the fact that the system was designed in 2004 or earlier. It does work, but is very dependent on specific facts. For my work provided BB, corporate security rules have disabled the necessary functions for AcuraLink to work.

Ok so this is what I have figured out. The verizon service works with Acuralink you have to have the tethering service activated on your account it runs anywhere from 15 to 45 dollars depending on the data plan you have. Apperantly the Acuralink service uses a tethering style connection. I activated the tethering service and after rebooting my blackberry storm the service connected throught the phone.

Yes, basically tethering is what allows the RL to connect to AcuraLink.
The car uses a data modem capable phone to packet data in order to upload to the Acura server via XM (ie. an trouble code/ diagnostic info). And also receive information as well. XM transmits Acuralink data to the car, the car engages the Bluetooth enabled phone to 'translate' data packets, which then appear as messages on the NAVI screen.
BUT, it depends on the phone model, carrier configuration and operating systems. Not all tethering capable phones are compatible with your RL.
It is best to check with Acura HFL website for compatibility and feature capability:
http://www.acura.com/HandsFreeLink.aspx
But you have to match model year, cell carrier, and phone model (sometimes operating system as well) to find out what phones are capable with what HFL and Acuralink features.
Problem is Acura HFL is very slow testing new phone models, and usually after they are on the market over 6 months, they show up as tested by Acura. I have seen phones discontinued and still listed as 'pending test' with HFL & Acuralink.
From my observations, Droid OS and WINMobile 6.5+ will not work with AcuraLink.
Hence my 2 year old Moto Q9h (ATT) with WinMobile 6.1 is a dinosaur, but works with EVERY feature of HFL and AcuraLink.
