Beware of XM, stock at 10 cents

I strongly believe they are going under, if you pay for a year and they go under you will lose your money.
They are doing desperate things like charging your card even if you cancel, they are on their last legs.

I can't stand Sirius and their poor support. Now that they are together who knows.
Stock is at the bottom for sure, but then people said that when it was at .60.

All indicators are that it is not a good long term buy and that BK is looming, but, that does not mean the company will shut down. Most companies still operate while in bankruptcy as that is the entire intent isn't? So I am not worrying whether SIRI is a Goodbye or a Good Buy at this time.

They offered me a "lifetime" rate the other day when I called to activate a new radio in my other car. I forget the rate for what I assume is both radios I have with them...around $350 or $400, I think...but I hesitated to pull the trigger on that one.

I'm gunna buy some SIRI-XM stock, it's so cheap! I don't think satellite radio is going away, and analysts are saying that by increasing the cost of service for secondary radios in March, they will amass more cash to pay down their debt.

OTOH, if subscriber churn increases.....that's another story. I have thought about buying a lifetime subscription for the XM radio in my home, but I'd never do it for my cars....I don't keep them long enough to justify a lifetime subscription.

For the home? I get a number of channels (I think they're Sirius) included with my Dish Network subscription. That's something you might want to check into before you lay down extra cash for a subscription in the house. I recall DirecTV having a bunch of the XM channels. Don't listen to 'em, though. When I'm home, I tend to have the TV tuned to...well...TV channels. Seldom listen to music at home. In the car and at work, music is a MUST.

Remember these guys WAY over paid for Howard Stern (spelling) and Nascar.
People are losing jobs at a record pace, might want to reconsider buying that stock.

100 shares=$10. They go under, I lost $10. They don't go under and the share price doubles to 20c a share, I made an additional amount. Just kidding. I should have used red text above.

We have DirecTV and the music channels are duplicated, but not any of the talk stations. My wife has a particular fixation with Oprah's station . She makes me listen to that crap on our long trips out to Colorado, as well as at home! Then there's The Power and America Left and America Right (yes, I listen to both).

If you paid by credit card, call them up about losing service. They will reimburse you and take the hit themselves.

My RL is in the shop and my loaner RL does not have XM so I'm on FM. I don't usually listen to FM so the experience is strange. Lousy audio quality, fades in and out through the mountains and I keep looking at the screen to see the artist but FM doesn't show anything. Needless to say, no Navtraffic either. I am always having trouble with the billing dept of XM and I'm fed up with dealing with them so I threatened to cancel both radios last week. I am glad I did not because I didn't realize that I would miss it that much until I experienced life without it.

Agree about lousy FM sound, but FM can show artist and song. Wife's 1999 bmw radio shows artist/song and been in many a domestic rental car with same capability.
Not sure why acura/alpine does not include this.

Can't get past all the danged commercials on FM radio. I had forgotten just how many they can string in a row!

Then again, I dislike when the DJs on XM talk. Shut up and play music. I can live with the occasional "you're-listening-to-channel-whatever" recording between songs, but if I want to hear a narcissistic DJ talk, I wouldn't pay for commercial-free (and talk-free) music. There were only a couple of XM channels that did this at certain times of the day, but I'm starting to hear it on more channels.

I've gotten to the point where I prefer my iPod in my other car and might just get an interface for the Acura if they keep going this direction.

What about HD radio (yes, realize that there is still commercials)? Do you think this will prevail over Sat radio someday?
I've never tried HD radio yet. Just a thought.

HD radio is still local commercial radio. I don't think it will prevail over satellite radio for the same reason that FM radio won't.

HD radio also does me no good on my frequent cross-country trips. I can't imagine my twice-yearly haul to Colorado without CNN (*shudder*).

The only FM radio I listen to on a regular basis is my local NPR affiliate.

Just got a notice that my additional radio is going from $6.99 to $8.99 unless I call in to get a longer term. That is bothersome. I am getting a bit upset at their price increases. Any of you guys call yet. Do you know what they are offering? I enjoy XM but it is getting to be too much for 3 radios. May have to scale back.

If XM goes under, what's gonna happen to the Live Traffic? Or I should say, what's gonna happen to Acura and other car companies that offer Live Traffic?

I think you were right in your first question "what's going to happen to LiveTraffic (actually NavTraffic)". I don't think the car companies have any obligation to continue providing the service nor is it a significant part of their revenue. Not even sure they get a share of it at all.
The service is actually provided by the Company NavTeq, just sold through XM. It's only one of the services they provide, but I think satellite is the only way they can deliver it. Even if Sirius/XM goes under, the satellites are still there. I don't know what the costs of operating satellites versus the rest of their business operations. Perhaps NavTeq buys the satellites?

But as someone else indicated, they could continue operations under Bankruptcy and renegotiate contracts.

XM has been really bad to deal with, hate them and will not go back.
They are in real trouble, do not care about customers, just survival, IMO.

Do not give them your card number for future extensions, and get a cancelation number when you cancel.
If you continue the service all the time, it will probably be fine.
I let mine expire and then canceled without proof and they sent a bill to collection agency, first time for me in 57 years, I will not pay, I do not need the credit rating.
I disputed it but who know what happens there. Credit company says I own $42, xm says it is $15, I will not pay, they are hoping people will pay and not deal with it. They said the service continues automatically, part of your 1 year contract. I could not get a supervisor while waiting for 1 hour, (busy) right, so she said a super would call me back, of course they never did, part of their tactics to put you off. Too much typing for me. I retired at 50 and this report reminds me of work from years ago, I am so past that.

Sorry to hear of your issues with XM. I have 5 XM accounts. Four radios (RL, Honda, Home and Mom's home) as well Nav Traffic in the RL. Only issue I've ever had is with transferring remaining money on one car/account to another car. Took about three calls until someone with some intelligence calculated the right amounts (calculating in the free three months with the new car) but other than that, no issues really. Couldn't go back to FM -- ever.

If XMSirius files for Bankruptcy protection in today's market I woudn't expect them to emerge -- look at a liquidation.

Circuit City started down that road late last year. They are now liquidating. THERE JUST IS NO ONE out there willing to extend credit or buy into bankrupt operations in today's market!

So is it possible my XM radio be worthless in the near future?

And everyone will need to go back to.. FM?!

I'll read the wiki thing later but I can't understand how they would go under with how everyone wants it! Maybe cuz Howard Stern and his lucrative contract..

I agree. The credit freeze is still in effect, and if the service rates are raised too much, churn will increase.
