Backup camera image quality

Anyone unhappy with their backup camera? I had one in my Land Cruiser but the one on my 06 RL simply blows. It shows the proper image but actual seeing it on the screen is nearly impossible. Anything i should check or does it just suck?

Can you take a picture of what you see? Not too sure what you mean by "It shows the proper image but actual seeing it on the screen is nearly impossible.".

Is it the clarity of the image, is it the viewing angle, the brightness/contrast, is it fuzzy?

Its a clear picture and it shows what i would want to see (if i could see it)....it just seems extremely dull and washed out - almost like i was looking at it with polarized sunglasses on.

Did you try turning up the brightness with the ring around the main control knob?

I'm happy with mine. In fact, the salesman was all but talking me out of it, saying that it washed out badly etc. Had a tech version there with it installed, took a look, looked like a CCD camera to me. Yes it DID wash out when the sun shown directly in to it, but that's the nautre of the beast.

It seems to have a concave (or something odd) curvature to the picture, but suppose that gives more of a wide angle approach.

BTW - have 600 miles on my car, so this is NOT a diffinitive answer. <g>

Image OK - hate losing the manual trunk unlatch

I think the image quality is OK much of the time. But in certain lighting conditions, the image is very washed out and difficult to see.

My biggest beef with the camera is that it takes the place of the manual trunk unlatch button. So now the only way to open the trunk is with the fob or the button in the cab.

Frankly I found the ability to open the trunk with a touch to be more useful than the backup camera. No one indicated that this would happen when I purchased the camera. I'm considering asking my dealership to remove the camera and give me back the release button.

Best,

That shouldnt be the case. I have the B up camera AND the one touch button. it was moved to the right of the camera (to the spot that it was intended to go in if someone opted for the bup camera)....sounds like your dealer just doesnt know about it and owes you a one touch button.

Have found the camera to have a usable image most of the time.. suprisingly most useful time has been at night.. the backup lights do a good job of lighting up the area.

The camera does go where the trunk release button was, but there should be a new button installed slightly to the right of the camera.

I have a backup camera AND the one touch button. I guess I'd argue with the "slightly" to the right. <wide grin> Mine seems to be about as far to the right as you could get it. And I do find it quite useful - glad it didn't disappear.

OK. I found that they DID install a one touch button. I didn't notice it before and the dealer didn't tell me about it.

Instead of the original big square trunk release (which is now the camera), the new button is a tiny flat rubber thing, far to the right and flush with the lip of the license plate overhang. You can't see it without bending over. You kind of have to find it by feel.

But it works. Thanks for the tip. I'm much happier now with the backup camera choice.

I got the b-up camera and thought I lost the ability to open the trunk as well. I had to search for the button to open the trunk since the sales agent didn't know about it.

I have a plastic clear cover for the license plate and sometimes I get glare of
it when using the b-up camera. It's not bad enough to take it off though.

Question Initial backup camara screen brighter

When I first turn on my '06 RL and put the car in reverse the screen is "very bright"; but after about 15 seconds the display gets a good bit dimmer. I can turn the "selection knob" and see it get brighter or dimmer; but never to the level of brightness that those first 10-15 seconds are.

I have gone into the Navi setup and have full brightness and contrast selected.

Has anyone else notice this?
