Anyone heard this? (2008 Nav lockout)
It's been reported on a ClubLexus forum that all mfr's are going to be required to lock out navigation functions while the car is moving. This came from a Mercedes-Benz dealer one of the members was talking to.
I personally think this is BS, but supposedly, it's "federal law".
Anyone heard anything like this?

Well, I was afraid Bob would have to move this.
Anyhow, another guy has just weighed in on CL, saying he just got an '08 S600 and it has no lockout. The question, though, is whether this goes into effect on cars manufactured after 1/1/08.
I still think it's probably BS.
Oh, and Plastikman - surely you know that Honda and Acura are among the few whose nav's DON'T lock you out when the car is moving ... ?

its BS, why not lock out the radio too, its a distraction. Why not lock out the HVAC controls, thats a distraction. Hell why drive, to many distractions. Infiniti and nissan took it upon themselves along with other manufacturers to do this.

I'm doubting the story now, too. I figure the word would be out there big time if they had passed some kind of law mandating this.
In the meantime, Toyota, Nissan, Infiniti, GM, Ford, Chrysler and others show no inclination to let their owners use this driving aid while driving. That's a real "Duh" move as far as I'm concerned, and I won't even consider any mfr's car that has this feature disabled.

My dads avaitor blocks out a few functions while the car is in motion but its not too bad and you can still use voice functions.
What they should at least do is put weight sensors in the passenger seat this way the can at least know that the passenger can work the system. I mean if there is a passenger in the car there is no safety risk in them using the navi whiles its moving.
