3D navi graphics

I believe that the 2008 RL has 3D navi graphics. I wonder if I just put in the new version of the map in my 06 and get 3D graphics? Or it involves hardware changes?

I imagine it would have to be a hardware and a software change.

What do you mean by 3D? Are you talking about the birds-eye view perspective some nav systems offer? It's more of a 3 point perspective then a staight down view? If that's what you mean, then I could see them adding that. It should only be a software change.

Regardless, that view is kind of annoying and useless once you've tried it. Straight down is the only good way of presenting this type of info.

mike, 3D is almost like looking through your windshield. Objects in the navi have dimentions.

OK, gotcha. No, I've never seen or heard of that! Do you need to wear those silly paper glasses?

Interesting. The brochure shows 2D graphics just like the 05-07 models. Is this a late breaking change? I will be at the dealer in a couple of days getting a CV boot replaced. There is an 08 ACC/CMBS/PAX sitting on the show room floor. I will check it out.

I believe that the Honda Legend in Japan has 3D Navi (buildings are shown 3D when zoomed in). It may have been mentioned in a thread here recently. I don't think the 08 RL has it.

Here is a 3D Navi application from Pioneer - I couldn't find a picture for the Alpine system in the Legend/RL.

I was in Tokyo last summer and nearly all the cabs had navi's, many with the 3D birds eye view. It was pretty rudimentary renderings of the buildings, but the general dimensions were correct. I had a 2003 Murano with navi and I always preferred the birds eye view. I also liked that your address book POI's were displayed on the map. For instance, if you had a favorite restaurant, you would see it on the map as the number stored on the address book.

I remember reading a while back where Honda and I think MS were collaborating on 3D navi's, anybody else see that?

To help you out....

http://www.honda.co.jp/LEGEND/equipment/navi.html

Scroll about halfway down the page to see the pictures of the 3D navi for the JDM Legend.

I have and RDX and a Pathfinder both with Nav. I personally like the BirdsEye View that Nissan offers. I am on my 4th Acura all with great navi's, but the Nissan offers a different view which I think is great. Would be a nice feature in the 08 RL

go to hondanews.com look under release. In the middle of the paragraph mentioned the 3D navi. Sorry, I don't know how to cut and paste.

nyjohnchan is absolutely correct. Cutting and pasting for him (my bolding):

Another key component of the RL Technology Package is the Acura Navigation System with Voice Recognition™. This easy to use system features a menu of 685 voice commands, a comprehensive destination guide with over 7 million points of interest, 3-D graphics for freeway interchanges, on and off-ramps and turn-by-turn voice guidance. In addition, 1.7 million U.S. cities and street names may be accessed through the voice recognition command. The system can be accessed through the steering wheel-mounted voice recognition buttons or by using the Interface Dial located on the instrument panel. Previously, the Acura Navigation System worked in the lower 48 U.S. states, but for 2008 it now works in Hawaii as well.

Wow. I wonder what it actually looks like.

Uh, that's not new. My 05 RL had that and 06 RL have that as well. When you have a route programmed and you approach a freeway exit ramp, it gives you a sort of "bird's eye" view in 3D in a little window on the screen with an arrow that shows whether to take the exit or stay on the freeway. I think it may have been introduced in Navi disc version 4.55, which I had in my 05 RL before trading it in. It's there in version 4.62 as well.

That's right, I have that on my navi as well. I never considered that truly "3D", though.

I scrolled further down to a link and it shows a dash with navi. What car is that?

Agreed (though it beats the old overhead 2D view) - but I'm pretty sure that's the 3D capability being referred to for the RL.

I briefly used those 'birds eye view" systems. To me it seems less useful then a straight overhead view. It's cool looking, but you can't judge distance and angles as well. It's not well suited for the purpose of navigating

Interesting - a bit farther down there is a reference to Google Earth and below that a picture of what looks like a PCMCIA card data modem from Wilcom - which is a high-speed wireless provider in Japan

Wilcom

Farther down it shows the back-up camera on the opposite side of the trunk latch - because of RHD I guess.

Translation - the Japanese Domestic Market Legend - known in the U.S/Canada as the Acura RL.

Oh, that is the 3-D you nyjohnchan is talking about? That is not new. Had it in my 06 which was delivered with some version 4.3x in it. There is no change, in that regard to 4.62, which also has the 3D exit info.

I was thinking something different, as we all were, which is why the 08 brochure still features the usual 2D top down view.

As an aside, my wife drove with a friend that has a relatively new Tahoe with back up camera and nav. My wife said, I always thought the RL nav was not that great, but in comparison to the Tahoe nav, well there is no comparison, Acura is much better.

The picture, not the text. This picture is not a JDM 2G Legend.

I persoanlly believe that the Bird view in Nissan/Infiniti is a cheap copy of 3D view. because its very confusing. Even the graphics do no compare to the RL.
I'll take the Legend's 3D navi over the Infiniti Bird View
