ZR3 Laser Shifter Installation

As I did with my TL I installed the Escort ZR3 laser shifter into the RL. I took pictures after the fact as I didn't remember to do it during the installation and I didn't want to take apart all the trim again.

There are three sensors, two for the front and one for the rear.

The red line gives you an idea of where I put the wires.

The front sensors are not screwed into the bumper like my TL. I couldn't get this done. I used 3M heavy duty double sided tape to attach it. It works like a charm. This is the same stuff mfgrs use to attach body sided molding and even the rear spoilers. It is very strong and can be purchased from a local hardware store.

I had to drill a hole in the car above the plastic trim - above your feet when driving. I drilled the hole just to the right of the rubber holder which holds that plastic trim in place. After the wires came through, I sealed the hole with 3M strip caulk.

The wires then went to the right - towards the center console and I tied them up and p ushed them avoe the plastic trim. In the pictures they came out but that is becuase I pulled them loose. Where you see my hand, I put the main control box with the sensors connected to them. As you can see I used velcro to attach the display to the trim right there. I do not really need to be able to see it - when the thing makes noise, slow down and turn it off.

I also did not connect the mute button because I didn't want it. I have another switch to the right of the mirror controls which cuts power to the unit.

I connected the unit to an add- a-circuit to a switched power source. I don't remember which one it was, butI think it was the cig. lighter adapters.

The rear sensor wire I ran under the trim on the driver's side to the rear seat. I pulled out the seat to run the wire to the trunk. The wire went between all the trim in the trunk to where the aluminum arm is that holds up the trunk. This is hollow and if you remove it (you will need help for that) you can take off the trunk lid from one of the pipes and run the wire through there to the trunk lid.

You will need to remove all the trim on the trunk lid to get the wire to where it should be to drill the hole in the rear.

One thing that proved confusing was the service manual pictured clips to remove the light on the trunk lid; however, the actual light was not attached the same way. If you put a flat head screwdriver where you see my finger to pull it out, you should be able to do it fine. It will still take a little effort.

Once all that is removed, you can drill a hole just to the left of where the left license plate screw - into the trunk lid - and you can push the wire through the hole. Seal the hole with 3M strip caulk again.

The sensor simply attaches to the trunk by the screws that hold in the license plate.

If you have questions feel free to ask. I plan on scanning a few pages from the service manual to diagram how the trunk trim comes apart - probably tomorrow sometime.

Great work. How long did it take? So you did take the rear seats out to run the wires to the trunk?

Took about 3 hours... I spent about 40 minutes trying to figure out how I was going to screw the front sensors in...then I came to the conclusion that I will just use the 3m tape to put it on there.

Yes, I did take out the rear seat. It wasn't all that bad.
