Yes, the Toyota didn't apply any break. She plowed through me at around 45-50 miles.

Wow, the RL took that hit like a champion.

I was in a similar accident (back when I had a 2001 F-150 4-door 4x4), except the guy that hit me was in a Ram 2500. He plowed into me (without hitting the brakes at all) at what the police estimated to be around 45mph. Damage estimates were over $18,000. Total loss, for which I was grateful.

As others have said, it's usually better that they total the car. They're usually never the same after such a high impact accident.

just be glad you are okay! so many crashes like these result in fatalities or the occupants suffer life long debilitating injuries...

be glad you were driving a safe car like the RL...

hopefully the car will be totalled and you can pick out a new one - to avoid the hassle of having to put together this one.... wait and see.. in the end, you can't avoid all car accidents - they happen, no matter how safely you drive, you can't control other people and the road is full of people who are drunk / high / not paying attention / inexperienced / reckless / etc.. the roads are full of these people...and they are all accidents waiting to happen... so be glad that your accident was one you could walk away from. many people in your situation are not so lucky.

part of why you are okay is because you chose to drive a safe car.

imagine what would have happened if you had "gone green" and were driving a Smart car????? the people driving those death traps are NOT "smart"....

dont know what other states say, but total loss is not set by insurance, the laws for totaling out a car are set by each state, in florida, 80% of the value or not safe to repair, judging by the pictures the passanger side looks like it may be more damaged but cant see in the pics, also, general rule of thumb, when the back glass break, the unibody is twisted

I only buy cars with a 5 star crash test rating

Glad to hear that you had the RL to save you.

I was in an accident about 11 years ago when a lady (minivan) blew a stop sign, I T-Boned her at about 30 mph (944) and have never been the same since, x-rays and MRI's all showed negative. I still need Physical Therapy at least once a week. Never again will I buy a car without it being 5 star rated all around, especially now that I have a kid.

I am glad to inform that I have finally received a call from the insurance today informing me that they have decided to total it. I should be getting another call within next 1-2 days for the settlement. In the mean time, I will be looking for a replacement. How much should I expect to pay for a 2010 RL Tech in the DC area?

Thanks.

The internet is a wonderful thing. And DC has at least 7 dealers you can solicit quotes from...Pohanka, Radley, Karen Radley, Chevy Chase, Rosenthal, Tisher, Criswell, and more if you go to B'more. Acura has $2500 marketing support so far as I know. Not the $4K when I was buying, but the point is you can make them work for the business.

Congrats on the total. Hopeful you can score a decent deal on a 2010 as the MY is now over.

An update - The insurance finally settled for the car. They assessed the value at $35,800. I had approximately $6,400 for the loan. After the deductible received approx $29K check. I will be shopping for a car this weekend. I am still trying to find a good deal on a 2010 RL.

does that mean you owed $6400 MORE than they assessed the value at? or you only owed $6400 on the car and you "owned" the bulk of the car at the time it was totalled?

if it is the former - then that stinks. you basically got screwed out of $6400 b/c the car depreciated faster than you paid if off.... on a lease they have gap coverage to cover this - didn't your auto loan have anythign like this built into it?

I would shop for the 09 so you don't get hit with the 1st year depreciation.

check out this website www.truecar.com

looks like a lot of purchases are going well below invoice now a days.

The latter. OP got a check for $29K after paying the outstanding loan amount.

I got a check for $29K after they paid off the loan. It wasn't a lease.

You can probably get a good deal at Radley Acura in Falls Church. They gave me a much better deal than Pohanka when I bought my 2006 RL. Pohanka quoted me about $1000 more than Radley. Good luck!

That is so funny, because Pohanka gave me about a $1000 better than Radley in 06, but I got a tech package...and any money I saved went into dePAXing, although I would have probably still gotten new wheels and tires anyway.

I guess it's all timing and when they want to get rid of their inventory. Radley has free oil changes for life....so that also a selling incentive!

Okay guys - I have a new ride! It is a 2010 RL Tech - Platinum Frost Metallic with Black interior. Price paid - 43K + TTL. I have also decided to put on 3M protection film on the front bumper, hood and fender. I must say 2010 has more punch. The response and gear shifting is much better than the 2008. The engine and handling feels much smoother than the 2008.

Two words: WOMAN SUV.

I know I might offend some people from time to time, but this thread should be named "WOMAN DRIVING NORMALLY." They are such safe drivers...I bet she gets a discount on her insurance rates because they (women) are such safe drivers.

Here's a little something I caught during my travels through Minneapolis.

Congrates! Makes me want to do a test drive to see the difference. It's good to hear that they did "refine" the RL from 2009-2010. Can't wait to see what they reveal for 2011?

Congratulations and enjoy the new ride!

Who is doing your 3M clear bra? I have it on my 2006 RL with 108k miles on it now. It is my second car with CB and swear by it.

I had mine done in Alexandria, but the guy has decided to just stay with the window tint.

Hi CadiGTi,

I am having the CB done at the dealership. I have to take it in next week to have them install it.

Hi Lakonic,

Yes, I am still in pain from the effects of the terrible whiplash. Getting better but taking a long time to heal. On top of it, I still kind of get a little uneasy when I see someone is racing behind me. And, yes, NOVA is getting bad to worst each year.

Best.

Not that we would ever wish this upon you or anyone again, the 2009-2010 RL's have upgraded headrests designed to minimize whiplash. I think the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard for active head restraints went into effect for the 2009 model year.

I am glad to hear you are recovering. Best wishes for continued progress in your recovery, and enjoy the new car.
