Why does so much carbon come out of the RL?

I get the '05 washed every week, and by the end of the week the chrome extenders are black again. Why does this car pour out so much carbon?

Its a ulev and oxygenates in the gas.

That still doesn't explain why theres so much carbon. My Accord doesn't do it. You pay 50K for a car and you can't keep the tips clean.

It sucks if your RL is white b/c it gets on the bumper as well.

1), you run premium, it has more iso-octane hydrocarbons than heptane. depending on air/fuel ratio, this may occur. it could indicate your combustion is more on the rich side, so CO's and VOC's are up. Its catalystic converter's job. it also means that at the exhaust tips, the exhaust is cool enough to cool down to a solid state (instead of gas state), meaning theres minimum impact on the environment. (less thermal output)

Good point, and I agree.

You know you can get new tips for the '05 that help with this, right?

nothing like people bitching about something so trivial if in fact the reason is an environmental one...basically, why bitch if it is something GOOD? Oh that's right. We precious humans can't have our exhaust tips a bit dirty especially on our 50K cars like anyone else gives a shit if the tips are dirty.

Sheesh

And some of us don't hug trees, either.

in simple terms, its a sign your car is running efficient, the coverter is coverting carbon monoxide to dioxide. might not happen not your accord due to different gas (if u run regular) and the compression ratio. the black stuff is on my tsx and i htink it happens to a lot of ppl.

have your dealer replace the tips with those from the 06 RL. There is another thread on this, and I'm having it done this week.

(design flaw is the answer to your original question)

As set forth above, the emission of carbon itself isn't a design flaw. That's a consequence of the kind of gas produced now-a-days, and the ULEV's dual-catalyst setup, as well as running a V6 engine in the high state of tune that the RL's is in.

However, the blackening of the exhaust tips can be lessened by a different design of the tips. But complaints about carbon on the tips are very different from the exhaust emitting carbon.

I find it very easy to clean the tips and thus don't find this to be an issue. Glad too its an environmentally friendly situation.

Why pay 50K for a car and have it look like a crap with black soot on the bumper?
I understand what you're saying but I can get a new lexus right now and won't have that problem and it burns off premium too.
