Whining Sound

No. I turned it off and on. told the mechanic too. He said it turns the bearing inside the compressor anyway even if off.
The sound is indeed similar to a video here https://acurazine.com/forums/second-...ulleys-894015/ . I was surprised when he said that.
Removing the belt for me is a major job. But how would that help find out? Because the AC isn't turning anymore, I'd turn it off, but alternator will work for a bit nonetheless? So if sound is still there, it's the alternator, if gone, it's the AC? Am I on the right track?

Well that’s what I’m saying, the AC compressor and Alternator are driven by the same belt, at least on theJ35 they are. Removing the belt won’t help if the J37 is designed the same way.

My steering fluid got topped off about 3 weeks ago.
I am not trusting that mechanic diagnosis that it's the compressor. I'm still inclined towards the alternator. I also have a strong suspicion of the drive belt tensioner. What I had changed was the timing belt tensioner last year, and if its not the same, then that tensioner might be stressed now with a new drive belt that i should've changed its tensioner along with it.
I''ll soon find out and report.
Thanks a lot for your help guys, surely.

Today the battery light came on with 'check charging system' in dash.
Should I take this as the whining sound is indeed the alternator? Could it still be something else and this a coincidence?
Is it ok to keep driving a bit till i fix it?
Please help!

I just listened to youe video. it is definitely the alternator going out. i recently replaced mine and it sounded just like that. It isn't too bad to replace. Tight fit but you could do it if you are mechanically inclined.

You were correct, alternator. I changed the drive belt pulley as well. Put in a brand new Denso alt.
Gonna sell the old one to be remanned.
Thanks!

I remember hearing something like that before, turned out it was the failing motor of the cooling fan, is that sound constant when the car is on?
Also I know this sounds dumb, but is it possible for transfer case to be whining at idle? like constant level of whining noise from P to D, does not change with revvs, can not be heard while driving but seems loud inside a garage and also it "looks like" noise from your previous video, but alternator gives smooth sound via the long screwdriver

The old wine in previous video of 2 weeks ago was gone with the change of alternator.
this new sound is not constant. Has not happened all day yesterday. albeit, while running in car, you can't really hear it. But it's not constant.
I'm wondering if a poor tightening of the drive belt pulley, which was replaced two weeks ago, could make such a sound. altho, it seems to be coming from the front, the fans area.
when changing the alternator, they needed to re-fill anti freeze. Does change the alternator require an anti-freeze refill in the radiator?
the mechanic heard the video above and can't really tell what it is.
