Transmission fluid

2008, RL, My transmission fluid is at the minimum level mark on the transmission dip stick. Anyone know how much fluid I need to add to bring it half way or all the way up to full level? Is it better to fill it 1/2,3/4, or all the way to the fill mark? Or maybe it doesn't matter, thanks guys.

Maybe it’s time for a flush?

MjAuto, I think you are right, but I'd like to top it off so I can hold off on the job for just a bit longer.

I added 200ml of transmission fluid through the dipstick (see photo below) It took the fluid level from the minimum level of the dipstick to just over halfway between the minimum and max level mark.

Never, ever, flush transmission fluid. Drain and fill. Never flush.

On these cars, for a nearly complete change, drain and fill 3 times in a row. But never, ever flush. It can introduce metal shavings from some other guy's car that were in the flushing machine, and it's been known to turn perfectly sound transmissions into instant bricks.

That’s a bit hyperbolic. I have also heard that a fluid flush is not advised but never that it will instantly ruin a transmission.

I’d add that if you use this method it’s important to drive the car between changes AND that the car should be driven fast enough to drop into final gear so as to move fluid out of the torque converter.

Fluid flush with a machine and chemicals is a NO NO! Honda and acura both have stated chemical detergents can ruin the trans.

3x3 drain and refill method of draining 3 quarts-4 quarts and redoing this 3-4 times is the best way. Wastes fluid but keeps debris from ruining the trans. There is a fluid exchange machine which hooks up to the trans cooler. As the cooler dumps out the old fluid, new fluid is pumped in so the whole system is changed. FLuid exchange this way is great but can be as much $$ as DIY 3x3

Check trans fluid level within 60 seconds of engine shut-off with the engine at operating temp. Use acura/honda DW-1 fluid. It's best to buy a case of 12 quarts vs 1 quart bottles way cheaper at honda dealer.

Main thing is the color of the fluid, should be a bright pinkish red. Any brown means the fluid is worn.

Hyperbolic? If the operator of the flushing machine practices perfect hygiene, nothing bad should happen. To be sure, most flushes don''t end in disaster. But it has been known to happen, and it's a needless risk.

Good additional tip about driving the car between each add/fill cycle. Thanks for noting it.

The hyperbolic part is claiming that it could cause the transmissions to become, “instant bricks.” Instant is hyperbolic. I’m sure they were able to drive for hundreds or even thousands of miles before they were destroyed. But, your point is still valid. Done incorrectly these flushes can be detrimental.

No, I get what you mean, and I've at least read claims that some took on shavings and became immobile in really, really short order.
